The person who made Scrubs recently gave fans a positive sign about what’s next for the show after its recent revival.
I was so excited to see Scrubs back on TV! The new season, which a lot of us are calling season 10, premiered on ABC on February 25th, and it brought in a huge audience – over 11.36 million people watched across all platforms in just five days! It’s amazing to have Zach Braff, Donald Faison, and Sarah Chalke back as their original characters after 16 years. It really feels like the Scrubs we all loved.
Bill Lawrence, the creator of Scrubs, recently spoke with Deadline about his new HBO series, Rooster. They also discussed the success of Scrubs, and Lawrence expressed his gratitude that people still enjoy the show. He also shared his thoughts on whether Scrubs could have had an eleventh season.
Regarding the possibility of more Scrubs episodes after the current season, which will finish airing in April 2026, Lawrence stated that everyone involved is hoping for the chance to create many more, and they’re optimistic about the possibility.
Lawrence didn’t say exactly who “we” refers to, but it’s likely he meant the original cast members are also hoping the show gets picked up for another season. This fits with what he’s said before, like his recent statement that he wants Ken Jenkins to reprise his role as Dr. Bob Kelso if the show is renewed.
There’s been some talk about the possibility of continuing Scrubs beyond its tenth season. However, recent comedy revivals haven’t always been successful. For example, Mad About You (2019) and Punky Brewster (2021) were both cancelled after just one season, and Saved by the Bell (2020) and Frasier (2023) only lasted for two.
Despite the challenges many rebooted comedies face, a few have found success. The 2017 revival of Will & Grace and the 2023 reboot of Night Court both lasted three seasons. However, the 2018 reboot of Roseanne, titled The Conners, really stood out, running for an impressive seven seasons on ABC.
During its first season, The Conners drew an average of 9.53 million viewers per episode, but that number dropped to 4.11 million by season six. Scrubs consistently performed well, averaging around 5.7 million viewers per episode – similar to The Conners’ third season. If Scrubs continues to attract this many viewers, ABC’s track record suggests they’re likely to renew the show soon.
Scrubs season 10 airs on ABC on Wednesdays at 8:00 p.m. ET.
