Scream star Skeet Ulrich confirms original plan for new trilogy had a killer twist that fans wanted

Scream spoilers follow.

Skeet Ulrich, known for his role in the Scream movies, revealed that the initial plan for the new Scream trilogy was quite different from what audiences ultimately saw. In Scream 5 (simply titled Scream), Ulrich returned as Billy Loomis, a Ghostface killer who originally died in the first film.

In the fifth and sixth movies, Billy Loomis appears as a hallucination to guide his daughter, Sam Carpenter (played by Melissa Barrera). According to one of the filmmakers, these appearances were planned as a way to set up Sam becoming the next Ghostface in the future Scream 7 film.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Matthew Lillard confirmed he won’t be returning for Scream 7, explaining that plans for his involvement ultimately didn’t work out.

I’ve made it clear how I feel. I wasn’t involved. When we discussed a fifth movie, the plan was for Billy Loomis’s story to unfold over three films, gradually turning his daughter into a killer.

So, things didn’t really go as planned, honestly. A bunch of stuff happened that threw everything off. But as for whatever the ‘seventh’ is? I have absolutely no clue what you’re talking about.

The Scream movie series has seen significant shifts lately. The directors of the fifth and sixth films, Tyler Gillett and Matt Bettinelli-Olpin, are no longer involved due to scheduling conflicts with the seventh installment.

Melissa Barrera was removed from the show, allegedly because of posts she made on social media regarding the conflict between Israel and Palestine. Following Barrera’s departure, Jenna Ortega also decided to leave her role as Tara Carpenter.

Things got really messy when the new director, Christopher Landon, bailed on the project. Thankfully, Kevin Williamson, who wrote the original Scream, came back to help get things back on track. It was a huge relief to know someone who understood the series was back involved!

The next Scream movie will bring back Sidney Prescott (Neve Campbell), who didn’t appear in the last one. This time, the story will center on Sidney, her husband Mark (Joel McHale), and their daughter Tatum (Isabel May) as they’re targeted by a new Ghostface killer.

Scream 7 is released in cinemas on February 27, 2026.
