Scream 7 Hit By Protests And Melissa Barrera Responds

Demonstrators disrupted the premiere of Scream 7 to show their support for Melissa Barrera, who previously starred in the series, and Barrera appears to have acknowledged the protest.

Melissa Barrera, who was set to star in the latest Scream movie, was fired by the production company, Spyglass Media Group, in November 2023. The decision came after she posted about the Israel-Gaza conflict on social media. Spyglass considered her comments antisemitic and claimed they promoted hatred, specifically referencing her discussion of “genocide and ethnic cleansing.” The studio publicly stated they have no tolerance for Barrera’s behavior or for antisemitism.

The studio’s decision sparked a strong backlash from fans of both the Scream movies and the actor, with many vowing to boycott the next film. Viewers criticized Spyglass for punishing the actor for expressing their personal views online, arguing it was unfair to be fired for speaking out.

Given the strong negative reaction and criticism the series has faced over the past couple of years, it wasn’t unexpected that people protested at the premiere of Scream 7. Now, it appears Jenna Ortega is also responding to the calls to boycott the film. She posted a message – simply “I see you” with a heart – on her Instagram story, which fans quickly interpreted as her acknowledging and appreciating their support.

The firing of actress Melissa Barrera by Spyglass Entertainment sparked widespread criticism, including from SAG-AFTRA. Amin El Gamal, who leads the union’s MENA Committee, stated that the company fostered a harmful work environment and discriminated against employees. He described the firing as unfair use of power and connected it to a history of anti-Palestinian and anti-Arab bias in Hollywood. El Gamal emphasized a demand for real consequences, not just for this instance of workplace discrimination, but also for the entertainment industry’s involvement in what he called apartheid and ongoing genocide.

Melissa Barrera played Sam Carpenter in Scream (2022) and Scream 6 (2023). Sam is the daughter of Billy Loomis, the killer from the original Scream (1996), and Christina Carpenter. In the films, Sam experiences hallucinations of her father as she attempts to protect herself and her family from a new Ghostface killer. Jenna Ortega starred as Sam’s younger sister, Tara Carpenter, in both movies.

Scream 7 is currently playing in theaters now.
