Let me tell you, when I spotted Scott Mills, I barely recognized him! He was wearing dark sunglasses and a big Yankees cap, and honestly, he looked quite thin and hadn’t shaved in a while. It was a noticeable change in his appearance.
Standing with him, his husband Sam Vaughan, who is 16 years younger, also appeared sad and tried to hide his feelings from the cameras.
This sighting might indicate how difficult the last few weeks have been for him. It’s the first time the former Radio 2 breakfast show host has been seen publicly since the BBC unexpectedly let him go last month, and sources say he’s been having a hard time.
Police questioned the 53-year-old man in 2018 about serious sexual offenses against a teenage boy that allegedly happened around 30 years ago. The investigation ended a year later when prosecutors decided there wasn’t enough evidence to file charges.
Mills was fired last month after the BBC learned the person who made the accusation was a minor at the time of the alleged incident – while Mills was in his mid-20s.
After keeping a low profile at their £1.5 million home in Hertfordshire, married couple Mills and Vaughan were seen yesterday walking their dog, Teddy, a golden cavapoo.
Fans will be surprised by the radio personality’s significant weight loss, and those close to him are very worried about his health.
Listeners knew Mills from the BBC as a cheerful and energetic personality, a stark contrast to the respected broadcaster who regularly attracted over six million listeners to his weekday morning show.
A source close to the former presenter revealed he’s going through a very difficult time and is shocked by recent events. He’s really struggling to cope with everything that’s happening.
People who care about Scott are really concerned about how he’s doing emotionally. He’s been open about his mental health struggles for a while now, but this is a particularly difficult time for him. He’s really struggling and it’s unclear how he’ll cope.
Everyone always thought of him as one of the friendliest people in the entertainment industry. He and Sam were always a lot of fun to be with – always laughing and ready to celebrate.
‘To see them like this shows the toll that Scott’s sacking has taken on both of them.’
I was really shocked, like many of my colleagues at the BBC, to hear about the sudden dismissal of a long-serving member of our team last month. After nearly thirty years of dedicated service, it was incredibly upsetting to learn he was let go due to issues with his personal conduct – the whole thing felt very mysterious and left a lot of us reeling.
It later came to light that the Metropolitan Police questioned Mills in 2018 regarding accusations of serious sexual assault that allegedly occurred between 1997 and 2000. Reports suggest he met the person making the accusations online, and the initial complaint was filed with Hampshire Police in 2016.
In December 2016, the case was transferred to Scotland Yard from Hampshire police. Around the same time, Mills, who was working at Radio 1, was asked to come to a London police station for questioning.
Following Mills’ dismissal, broadcasting executives confessed they knew about the police investigation while he was still employed, although they weren’t fully informed of all the specifics. They also disclosed that a deliberate choice was made to continue broadcasting him, even though he earned at least £355,000 annually.
The company suffered more embarrassment after the Metropolitan Police told the Daily Mail that officers had contacted the BBC ‘several times’ over the years.
As a lifestyle expert, I’ve been following this situation closely. What I understand is that my team and I have reached out to the individual’s workplace multiple times – starting back in 2017 when we began looking into this, and continuing right up to today. We’ve been committed to staying in communication throughout the entire process.
But far from affecting his career in any way, Mills went from strength to strength at the BBC.
Oh my gosh, I’ve been following him forever! It all started when he hosted the Strictly podcast back in 2018 – I remember being so thrilled, especially since he’d actually been on the show in 2014! Then, he was amazing presenting Eurovision in 2019, and things just kept getting better when he landed that prime afternoon slot on Radio 2 in 2022. But honestly, when he took over the breakfast show from Zoe Ball last January? I nearly screamed! It was always meant to be, I just knew it!
Tim Davie, the former head of the BBC, explained that they continued to employ the DJ until recently to protect a past decision. He stated that new information emerged in the weeks leading up to the contract’s termination on March 27th, which ultimately led to the decision to end his employment.
Mills reportedly continued communicating with the person who made the complaint until 2006, and it’s claimed their relationship remained friendly, with many people aware of it. He has instructed lawyers at a London firm called Level regarding his dismissal, but hasn’t taken any legal steps so far.
In a single statement released through his lawyers, Mills expressed his sincere gratitude to everyone who had contacted him, saying he was thankful ‘from the bottom of my heart’.
Although the images are disturbing, they reveal a positive aspect for Mills: the unwavering public support of Vaughan, who has remained loyal throughout this situation.
The couple first connected in 2016 at a radio awards ceremony in Wales and recently married in Barcelona in June 2024. The wedding was attended by many famous faces, including Ms Ball, Rylan Clark, and Calvin Harris.
Those who were there say it was the ‘very best day’.
People in Britain really connected with them after they won the BBC show Celebrity Race Across The World in 2024.
According to one source, Sam has been a strong support, and being seen with him publicly was a clear show of solidarity.
It’s incredibly difficult when your partner is accused of a sex crime, and Sam has been handling it with remarkable strength and grace.
‘He’s the one thing that is keeping Scott going.’
