Scott Mills’ own production team were not warned about his dramatic sacking by the BBC.
Radio 2 personality, age 53, was unexpectedly dismissed last Tuesday following claims regarding his past personal behavior in a previous relationship.
Greg Mills, who began hosting the breakfast show last year after Zoe Ball, presented the program as usual yesterday, ending it at 9:30 AM with the sign-off, ‘Back tomorrow.’
I was absolutely floored when an email landed from Lorna Clarke, the BBC’s head of music. It was completely out of the blue, and she just… announced he was gone. Just like that! It was devastating, honestly. I couldn’t believe it.
Up until then, his team had been working on the Monday breakfast show as usual, completely unaware of what was about to happen.
I understand this news may be surprising and come as a shock.
Many of us have worked with Scott for a long time, on a variety of different projects.
Before the email from Clarke, his production team – including longtime collaborators Patrick Thomas and Ben Stones – hadn’t been told he was leaving.
According to a BBC insider who spoke with the Daily Mail, even Mills’ own team was surprised by the news, learning about it just like everyone else.
Gary Davies began Tuesday’s Radio 2 Breakfast Show without acknowledging the recent dismissal of his coworker, Scott.
The host of the Radio 2 Breakfast Show was taken off the air last Tuesday. Following a difficult meeting with BBC management regarding his behavior, his contract was then cancelled.
Claims against 53-year-old Mills reportedly stem from an incident that occurred ten years ago when he worked at Radio 1, and center around a past relationship.
Following Mills’ exit last week, veteran DJ Davies, age 68, is now hosting the show. He’s expected to continue in this role for at least another week while the station searches for a full-time replacement.
Davies launched his show on Tuesday morning with a catchy jingle, immediately asking listeners what they’d already achieved that day. He then played a series of songs.
The 7:00 AM news report didn’t mention Mills, but the update at 7:30 AM prominently featured a headline stating that Mills was under police investigation in 2026 regarding alleged serious sexual offenses against a teenager.
Davies shared a message from a listener who enjoyed his time hosting the Breakfast Show. The fan wrote: ‘The 80s were the best for Top of the Pops, and now you’re starting my day – it doesn’t get much better than that!’
The DJ spent the first half-hour of his show repeatedly promoting Radio 2’s Eurovision coverage, which was a bit awkward considering he’s a regular commentator for the BBC’s Eurovision broadcasts.
As a lifestyle observer, I’ve noticed a bit of a strange situation unfolding with the BBC and the departure of a certain personality. It’s fascinating to see how these things are handled – or not handled, as the case may be! People are definitely picking up on the radio station’s silence, and it’s sparking a lot of conversation. One listener even compared it to a classic comedy sketch, saying they’re pretending it’s not happening – a bit like ‘Don’t mention the war!’ It’s clear this missing piece of news is on everyone’s minds.
‘Gary Davies desperately playing records non-stop. No discussion between any presenters.’
Radio 2 host Davies has filled in for other DJs during holidays and recently took over ‘Pick Of The Pops’ after Steve Wright’s passing in 2024.
The sudden exit of Mills, one of Radio 2’s highest earners at up to £360,000 annually, has created significant disruption, according to sources at the Daily Mail. Colleagues are reportedly shocked, and management is urgently searching for someone to fill the role.
According to a source, Mills was asked to attend a meeting last Tuesday following a complaint made against him.
According to a source at The Sun, the radio host was immediately removed from his Radio 2 show after the complaint, and his contract was ended over the weekend. The entire process, from the complaint to his departure, happened remarkably quickly – in under five days.
According to a source familiar with the situation, Scott Mills was informed about the accusation during a meeting with his leadership team. The source described him as appearing visibly anxious.
He’s completely unreachable right now. No one can get in touch with him – he isn’t responding to calls or messages. Everyone who knows him is shocked by this sudden change.
According to the Daily Mirror, the decision to dismiss Mills followed a 2016 police inquiry into allegations of serious sexual offenses involving a teenager.
According to reports, the DJ was briefly questioned by police, but the investigation was closed because they couldn’t find enough proof. The newspaper also stated that his job loss was connected to the same person involved in the initial questioning.
Mills is the newest in a growing number of well-known faces to leave the BBC, which has been dealing with several controversies. He joins others who have recently departed, including news presenter Huw Edwards and the MasterChef hosts Gregg Wallace and John Torode.
Sources suggest the abrupt dismissal, revealed in a brief public announcement yesterday, was among the final actions of outgoing director-general Tim Davie. He reportedly aimed to simplify things before his departure on Thursday.
According to a source, Mr. Davie, who stepped down after it was revealed that a Panorama episode contained edited footage of a speech by former US President Donald Trump, was hoping for a final attempt to resolve the situation.
Rhodri Talfan Davies, the current interim leader, and Matt Brittin, who will become the permanent director-general, are facing a significant challenge: they need to quickly find someone to replace Mills, or they risk losing listeners.
As a long-time listener, I’m thrilled to see the breakfast show doing so well! It’s become a real national favorite, regularly pulling in around 6.5 million listeners each week. Things really turned around after a bit of a dip when Zoe Ball left – people have definitely come back since the new host took over.
Mills’s team are said to be taking legal advice in the wake of his sacking.
A spokesperson for the Metropolitan Police stated that an investigation began in December 2016 after receiving a referral from another police force. The investigation concerns allegations of serious sexual offenses against a teenager, which reportedly occurred between 1997 and 2000.
Police questioned a man in his 40s under caution in July 2018 as part of their investigation.
Police provided the Crown Prosecution Service with all the evidence they gathered. However, the prosecutors decided there wasn’t enough evidence to file charges, so the investigation was closed in May 2019.
A representative for Mills declined to comment when approached by the Daily Mail.
Lorna Clarke, the BBC’s director of music, informed staff in a note yesterday that Scott Mills has left both the Breakfast Show and the BBC. She acknowledged the news was sudden and likely came as a shock.
As someone who’s had the pleasure of working with Scott for years – across so many of our shows on Radio 1, 5 Live, Radio 2, and TV – I wanted to let you know about this as soon as I could. It felt really important to share the news with everyone right away.
She admitted the news would likely surprise viewers and regular listeners of the breakfast show, and said she’d share more details about the show’s future as soon as she could.
She continued, saying she understood people would have questions, but she wouldn’t be making any further comments at this time.
The BBC confirmed that Scott Mills is no longer working with them, but they don’t typically discuss individual employment matters.
Mills hosted his last show last Tuesday, after appearing on BBC’s Comic Relief the Friday before. He ended the show by saying, ‘See you tomorrow.’ Sadly, he lost his job just six days later.
