Sci-fi classic Galaxy Quest had Alan Rickman scenes cut “at the last minute” before release

Sigourney Weaver wants a director’s cut of the 1999 comedy Galaxy Quest to be released. She explained that many scenes were removed from the film just before it came out.

The movie stars Sigourney Weaver, Alan Rickman, Tony Shalhoub, and Tim Allen as the cast of a beloved but old science fiction TV show. They’re kidnapped by aliens who think the show was actually a documentary about their real lives.

In a recent Vanity Fair video reflecting on her impressive career – including roles in films like Alien, Avatar, and the delightfully wicked character in Holes – Sigourney Weaver discussed her experience with a particularly wonderful cast and expressed her disappointment that fans haven’t had the chance to see more of their work together.

She explained that she’d love to see a director’s cut released. Apparently, Dreamworks removed some of the more complex scenes featuring Alan right before the film came out. They did this because they wanted the movie to appeal to a younger audience and compete with Stuart Little.

Weaver expressed confusion about why the film isn’t being re-released with more of his unique and captivating footage.

She also recalled that Bob Gordon had written a sequel, but he refused to give it to Dreamworks, believing they hadn’t understood the potential of the first film.

We’d always planned to make another film, but after Alan’s death, we lost the motivation. Still, it was a wonderful experience creating this tribute to actors.

She shared that she feels a strong connection and sense of sisterhood with her character, Gwen, even more so than with any other role she’s played.

“I had really wanted to play Gwen because Gwen is much closer to me than Ripley is,” she said.

I was hoping to portray a young, aspiring actress in the glamorous world of fame. She’s beautiful, with a striking figure and blonde hair, but people underestimate her abilities – even someone as important as the commander doesn’t take her seriously.
