Scavengers Reign creator confirms the show's untimely cancellation on Netflix

As a lifelong cinephile who has weathered numerous cancellations and reboots alike, I must say that the news of Scavengers Reign‘s cancellation has left me crestfallen, to put it mildly. Much like a stranded crew on an alien planet, I too found myself captivated by this stunning, vibrant mystery, eagerly awaiting each new episode to uncover more about its denizens and secrets.

Titled “Scavengers Reign” by Joseph Bennett and Charles Huettner, this adult-oriented animated series follows a team who suffer a crash landing on a mesmerizing yet potentially lethal planet. As they strive to endure and reunite, they confront the planet’s breathtaking wonders as well as its sinister, menacing aspects hidden within the wilderness.

Initially, the show debuted on Max television network in 2023, but was later cancelled and transferred to Netflix, where the creators anticipated a possible revival. Unfortunately, after spending several months on Netflix, the streaming service has ultimately decided to end it. Now, moving a series to Netflix with hopes of renewal is a risky decision — Netflix often struggles to keep its own programs running for more than one season, let alone shows from other networks.

Currently, there are no plans for a second season of the series called “Scavengers Reign“. The creator, Joseph Bennett, shared this news on his Instagram and felt it was important to inform the dedicated fanbase directly because they have been strong supporters of the show and he didn’t want to leave them wondering.

He detailed how the team has tirelessly fought to ensure the success and continuation of their show, not just for a second season, but for its production as a whole. As early as 2016 with the Scavengers short film, they’ve had to battle every step of the way to bring this project to life, culminating in the release of the first season last year.

There’s plenty of tale yet to unfold, and that’s something Bennett wants fans to understand. He even revealed a sneak peek of the team’s work for season 2. “However,” he added, “this is not the final chapter. There’s more story to be shared, we’re eager to continue the journey, and we’ve created an in-house teaser at Green Street showcasing what’s in store for the second season.” Here’s a look at the teaser below:

I’m genuinely disappointed about the cancellation. Ever since I discovered Scavengers Reign on Netflix earlier this year, I’ve been a dedicated fan. There’s an extraordinary quality to it that sets it apart. The narrative is gripping and the animation is top-notch, but what truly made the show exceptional was its use of ambiance; you never knew when an intriguing, eccentric inhabitant of this harsh alien world would appear next. To add to this, the music by Nicolas Snyder was brilliantly composed.

Season 1 of Scavengers Reign is still streaming on Netflix.
