The trailer for the new Scary Movie looks encouraging, but it also shows the series is still facing a long-standing issue. Since the first Scary Movie came out in 2000, the franchise has earned an impressive $890 million worldwide. Despite not being critically acclaimed, Scary Movie has consistently been a hit with viewers.
It’s no surprise that a new Scary Movie will arrive in June 2026, marking the first installment since 2013’s Scary Movie V. The recent success of Scream 7 suggests a strong comeback for this well-known horror parody series, demonstrating that Scary Movie 6 could also perform well. Throughout their history, the Scary Movie and Scream franchises have followed similar paths.
As a big movie fan, I’ve seen this pattern before with both of these franchises. They both started strong with original trilogies back in the late ’90s and early 2000s – they made tons of money, even if critics weren’t always kind. Then, they each had a decent comeback film in the early 2010s, which got a mixed reaction. Now, with Scary Movie 6 coming out, it looks like both are getting rebooted for a new generation in the 2020s, too. It’s a cycle I’ve definitely noticed!
Scary Movie 6 Promises To Parody Dozens Of Movies

As a big horror fan, I’m a little worried about the new Scary Movie. The first trailer feels like the franchise is repeating old mistakes – much like what happened with Scream 7. It throws parodies of a ton of different movies at you in just two minutes, and honestly, it looks like it’s going to be the same kind of all-over-the-place satire we’ve seen before, instead of something fresh and focused.
The first trailer for the new Scary Movie already pokes fun at a lot of recent horror hits, including Halloween 2018, M3GAN, Smile, Terrifier 3, Get Out, the recent Scream movies (Scream 2022 and Scream VI), Sinners, The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, The Substance, Heart Eyes, Wednesday, Longlegs, Weapons, and Final Destination: Bloodlines, among others. This is likely to please many longtime fans of the series.
Okay, so it’s been thirteen years since we’ve seen a Scary Movie on the big screen, and you’d think with all that time, they’d have a ton of new stuff to spoof, right? And they do, to some extent. But as a big fan, I always like to remember what people thought of the first movie. Looking back at those old reviews really shows how much the filmmakers were trying to do – they were aiming to poke fun at so many different films, and it definitely shaped how it was received.
The original Scary Movie surprisingly earned positive reviews, even receiving a 3.5-star rating from renowned critic Roger Ebert. A key to its success was focusing its parody on just two films. Most of the movie closely follows Scream, recreating scenes almost exactly – but with a comedic twist.
Scary Movie Always Needed A Clearer Focus
The first Scary Movie is easily the strongest film in the series, largely because it focuses its parody on a single source. While it also pokes fun at I Know What You Did Last Summer, the two movies are so alike—they even had the same writer—that the parody feels natural and not strained.
Most of the jokes in the first Scary Movie – referencing films like The Sixth Sense, The Shining, The Blair Witch Project, The Matrix, and The Usual Suspects – were quick and didn’t distract from the main story. However, the later Scary Movie films tried to parody too many things at once, which became a major weakness.
Scary Movie 2 wasn’t just a parody of haunted house films like The Haunting, The Haunting of Hill House, The Legend of Hell House, and Poltergeist. It surprisingly also made fun of comedies such as Dude, Where’s My Car?, The Rocky Horror Picture Show, and Bloodbath at the House of Death. By trying to spoof too many movies, including Charlie’s Angels and What Lies Beneath, the film felt cluttered and overdone.
Like its predecessor, Scary Movie 3 was strongest when parodying films like Signs and The Ring. Introducing jokes based on 8 Mile felt out of place and complicated what was otherwise a simple story. The excitement surrounding Scary Movie 6 is largely due to the promised return of the Wayans family.
Scary Movie 6’s Approach Does Fix A Major Franchise Mistake
The Wayans family, known for the first two Scary Movie films, initially helped to shape the series. However, by Scary Movie 4 – which combined elements from The Village, War of the Worlds, and Saw – and especially with Scary Movie V, which threw in references to The Cabin in the Woods, Paranormal Activity, Rise of the Planet of the Apes, and Black Swan, it became obvious that the films had strayed far from their original concept.
Despite its chaotic nature, the unpredictable humor is a big part of what makes the Scary Movie series enjoyable, and even the weaker installments have some funny bits. The trailer for Scary Movie 6 shows the franchise is making a crucial change that could bring it back to the quality of the earlier films, when the Wayans brothers were in charge.
The trailer for the new Scary Movie is already more explicit than Scary Movie 4 and Scary Movie V, which is exciting for fans of the original films. The later sequels didn’t quite hit the mark because they toned down the raunchy humor. This reboot seems to be going back to the offensive and shocking style that made the first Scary Movie films so popular.
