Viewers on Amazon Prime Video are enjoying the new romantic comedy My Mother’s Wedding. The 2023 film from Vertical has quickly become one of the most popular movies available to stream on the platform.
According to Flix Patrol, as of February 19th, My Mother’s Wedding is the fifth most popular movie on Amazon Prime Video in the U.S. It’s performing better than films like Click and Leap Day, but isn’t as popular as Relationship Goals, The Wrecking Crew, or Operation Fortune: Ruse de Guerre – which is currently number one on the streaming platform in the United States.
The film My Mother’s Wedding premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival in September 2023 and will be widely released in August 2025. It tells the story of three sisters – Katherine, Victoria, and Georgina – who return home to support their mother, Diana, as she prepares for her third wedding.
Featuring Sienna Miller, Emily Beecham, and Scarlett Johansson as Victoria, Georgina, and Katherine, and with Kristin Scott Thomas playing their mother, My Mother’s Wedding also includes a strong supporting cast with Freida Pinto, Thibault de Montalembert, and Joshua McGuire.
Although the film featured well-known actors and marked Thomas’s first time directing a movie, My Mother’s Wedding didn’t perform well in theaters, earning only $1 million and receiving negative reviews from both critics and audiences.
Honestly, I was hoping for more from this movie. It’s getting pretty mixed reviews – only 41% from critics on Rotten Tomatoes, and even the general audience score isn’t amazing at 50%. A lot of reviewers thought it was a bit shallow and overly sentimental, which is disappointing considering the talented cast. I’m still hoping I’ll enjoy it, but I’m going in with pretty low expectations now.
My Mother’s Wedding Offered A Unique New Challenge For Kristin Scott Thomas
Naomi Thomas, known for her work on projects like The English Patient and Slow Horses, shared that she’d been interested in directing for quite a while before beginning work on My Mother’s Wedding.
As an actress, I’ve always found it fascinating to work with directors who also have acting experience. They understand both the performer’s and the filmmaker’s perspectives – what it’s like to be in front of the camera, and also what goes into the preparation and work behind it, as she explained to The Hollywood Reporter shortly before the film came out.
For Thomas, being the director felt incredibly strange, especially as a first-time director. She explained, “It’s still hard for me to believe I was the one making the choices.” She added that it was a difficult adjustment, because she was used to being directed by others, rather than being the person in charge.
My Mother’s Wedding is currently available to stream on Amazon Prime Video.
