Scarlett Johansson’s Black Widow: The Final Farewell to the MCU?
It was disclosed by a writer from Marvel Studios that one of the founding Avengers has permanently parted ways with the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). Since the debut of the team in 2012’s “The Avengers,” some essential characters have gradually been phased out within the franchise. However, there has been speculation about the permanence of departures in the series, as figures like Robert Downey Jr. (whose character is deceased in the MCU) have reappeared at Marvel Studios, leading fans to question if anyone truly leaves the universe for good.
It appears that, based on the statements of Marvel writer Eric Pearson, it’s quite unlikely that Scarlett Johansson will return to the MCU. Pearson shared this view while promoting his new film for the franchise, “Thunderbolts,” suggesting that he believes Johansson, who played Black Widow, has concluded her association with Marvel Studios.
In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, when asked if Scarlett Johansson might rejoin the franchise, Chris Evans responded, “I’d find it surprising.
To start off, let me clarify that I haven’t got a clue, but it seems unlikely to me. The conclusion of ‘Endgame’ and the subsequent Black Widow prequel were beautifully done, so I find it hard to imagine anything different. However, I must admit my knowledge about the current state of ‘Doomsday’ is scant.
As a die-hard cinema enthusiast, I must say, Scarlett Johansson’s swan song in the Marvel Cinematic Universe was in 2021’s “Black Widow.” In this film, she graced the screen as the lead character, a role she deserved after years of sharing it with her fellow Avengers. It was long overdue for Black Widow to have her own standalone movie, just like many of her teammates before her.
After the release of “Black Widow,” the actress who played the character experienced a high-profile dispute with Marvel Studios, stemming from a court case regarding the film’s concurrent streaming and theater release, which she contested against Disney.
Johansson has stated that she’s finished with the franchise, informing fans that Natasha Romanoff has accomplished “[all that she needed to accomplish].
I’ve completed the task at hand. Indeed, it’s finished… The storyline has concluded. Everything I needed to accomplish has been done. Additionally, reprising a role repeatedly for over a decade creates an extraordinary, one-of-a-kind journey.
Scarlett Johansson portrayed Black Widow across eight Marvel Cinematic Universe films, starting with “Iron Man 2” in 2010. Subsequently, she departed the franchise following her role in “Black Widow,” setting the stage for Yelena Belova, played by Florence Pugh, to continue the story within the Marvel universe.
Discussions are ongoing about the actress who played Natasha Romanoff possibly taking up an executive producer role in a future Marvel Studios production, however, the exact name of the project remains undisclosed at this time.
Is Scarlett Johansson Really Done With the MCU?
In the Marvel Comics universe, characters rarely disappear forever, but Scarlett Johansson seems to be approaching her exit from the franchise as definitively as possible. Yet, there’s still a slim possibility she might return – only if the conditions were absolutely ideal.
It’s unlikely that fans will get to see Johansson return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe except possibly when the other original Avengers make their comeback as well.
It might be fitting for Scarlett Johansson to reappear in the upcoming Avengers films, given that Robert Downey Jr. is confirmed for “Avengers: Doomsday” (even though he’ll play Doctor Doom rather than Tony Stark), and there are whispers suggesting Chris Evans could return too.
Imagine a scenario where “Avengers: Doomsday” and “Secret Wars” present an intriguing twist: The original Avengers team could be portrayed as malevolent versions from different universes, acting as a formidable foe. This new challenge would require the current team of Avengers to face them directly in a high-stakes battle.
This scenario might be ideal for wrapping up the current chapter in Marvel Cinematic Universe storytelling, prior to the anticipated more focused direction following the conclusion of the Multiverse Saga. Provided that Scarlett Johansson agrees to work with Marvel Studios again, which is not impossible given the unpredictability of events.
