Scarlett Johansson Talks About Directing Marvel Films and Her Love for Human-Centered Stories

Scarlett Johansson, known for her role in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, has expressed interest in taking a directorial role instead of acting again. Johansson was both producer and star of the 2021 movie “Black Widow”, which marked a standalone journey for her initial Avenger character. The film featured Florence Pugh, David Harbour, Rachel Weisz, Olga Kurylenko, and Ray Winstone alongside Johansson.

In an interview with Deadline to publicize her 2025 directorial debut, Eleanor the Great, the actress shared her views on filmmaking, emphasizing the importance of fostering “meaningful relationships.” Johansson expressed a desire to direct a Marvel film since she prefers larger projects that typically center around characters in a more personal way.

Later on, she discussed Black Widow as an illustration. Johansson remarked: “Not only was I involved in producing Black Widow, but also shaping the narrative and the relationship between Natasha and her sister Yelena Belova, as well as the family drama, which is a significant part of this smaller film set in a vast universe, seems to me, a means of preserving […] the essence of […] human connection.” Proceeding, she emphasized that movies capable of making a story intimate and small amidst a larger cosmos are her “favorite big screen experiences.

What Scarlett Johansson’s MCU Comments Mean

Earlier, there were talks about Scarlett Johansson reprising her character Natasha Romanoff/Black Widow, but she clarified that she won’t be seen in Avengers: Endgame. She elaborated on this by stating:

As a movie reviewer, I find myself pondering over the prospect of reprising my role in this upcoming film. However, it remains unclear how a return could logically fit into the narrative without disrupting the cohesive storyline that has been established. My character’s journey has reached its conclusion, and I am hesitant to alter that narrative arc.

In truth, I cherish the camaraderie shared with my fellow cast members, and the thought of continuing our collaboration is incredibly appealing. Yet, it is crucial that we respect the integrity of the character’s story and not compromise its essence for the sake of sentimentality. The audience has invested their time and emotions into following this tale, and it is essential that we preserve the emotional resonance they have come to expect.

It’s possible that even if she doesn’t act in the MCU again, the versatile star might rejoin Marvel in a different role, such as producing or directing. Given her successful production of Black Widow and her directorial debut with Eleanor the Great, it wouldn’t be surprising to see her leading a Marvel project or directing one in the future.

Our Take On Scarlett Johansson’s MCU Comments

If Johansson expresses an interest in directing a Marvel Cinematic Universe film, there are numerous potential projects that might align with her character-centric approach. Given her previous creative involvement with the Yelena character, a sequel to Black Widow or a Thunderbolts installment could be particularly suitable for Johansson.

Instead, as the MCU shifts its focus towards the X-Men following “Avengers: Secret Wars”, the actress might lead a project centered around one of Marvel’s mutant-centric properties. Regardless, it would be delightful for long-time fans to see Johansson rejoin the Marvel Cinematic Universe again.
