Scarlett Johansson says The Avengers “felt like a big mess” – but one moment changed her mind
Prior to “The Avengers” rising to the worldwide sensation it is now recognized as, the ensemble cast wasn’t entirely convinced that the film would be successful.
Scarlett Johansson reminisced about the film where her character, Black Widow, joined forces with other Marvel superheroes.
Recently, I spilled my thoughts to Vanity Fair about an exciting project. You know, the one where all our favorite superheroes join forces? Well, let me tell you, it felt like trying to juggle too many superpowers at once – quite a chaotic experience!

Speaking about the initial production of “Avengers“, she admitted that at the time, none of us had a clear understanding of just how much potential this team, specifically the Avengers, truly held.
It was made clear that every superhero, including Iron Man, Captain America, and Thor, possessed a distinct personality, leaving the cast uncertain if their collective storyline would maintain a consistent tone for a joint adventure.
When you combined everyone, including Hulk and Hawkeye, it seemed overwhelmingly chaotic, I must admit.
On the set, it seemed surreal since everyone appeared somewhat mad, leaving us questioning ourselves. In essence, it was as if we were wondering, “Are we truly doing this?”, given that nobody seemed certain whether our efforts would be successful or not.
2012 marked the year that the film “Avengers” was unveiled. In this movie, a band of superheroes join forces with the objective of thwarting Thor’s sibling, Loki, from seizing power over our planet.
The movie, with a budget of $225 million, eventually earned an impressive $1.521 billion at the box office, leading to three follow-ups. It’s clear that their trust in the project paid off handsomely for Johansson and her fellow actors.
Reflecting on the film, the actress who played Natasha Romanoff mentioned a pivotal scene that convinced her The Avengers would succeed – this was one of the initial instances where the team united.
She mentioned remembering a significant moment, specifically when we were gathered at Grand Central Station in New York City… The notable occasion where all the characters were united, as if in a full 360-degree view, she described.
“That was the moment where all of us were like, ‘I think this is maybe gonna work’.
Experiencing a sense of power, I found that the playback was incredibly impressive, yet, during filming, it didn’t carry the same cool vibe.
