Scarlett Johansson Knows Cosmo Is An Unusual Name, But I Did Not See Her Mother-In-Law’s Response Coming

Celebrity parents are known for choosing unusual names for their babies. Forget traditional names like Olivia and Noah – you’re more likely to hear about names like Saga Blade (daughter of MGK and Megan Fox) or X Æ A-Xii (Elon Musk and Grimes’ son). It makes you wonder what the grandparents think of these choices, as they definitely have opinions! Scarlett Johansson even talked about how her and Colin Jost’s mothers reacted when they named their son Cosmo.

In 2021, Scarlett Johansson gave birth to her first child with Saturday Night Live’s Colin Jost (she also shares a daughter, Rose Dorothy, with ex-husband Romain Dauriac). When it came time to announce the new baby’s name to their loved ones, they had two totally different experiences with their mothers. The Eleanor the Great director said on Today with Jenna & Friends:

My mom really loved it, which was a huge relief. She even shared a sweet memory about having a third-grade crush named Cosmo! A few days later, my mother-in-law said she liked the name too, because it felt familiar and recognizable.

It’s difficult to say if Colin Jost’s mom disliked the name Cosmo as strongly as Scarlett Johansson dislikes being called ScarJo. However, she clearly didn’t love it and explored other, more familiar names. Perhaps she should have discussed it with Michael Che, who jokingly acts as Cosmo’s publicist.

It’s actually pretty interesting that Scarlett Johansson’s mom remembered the name from her childhood. I always thought ‘Cosmo’ was just a reference to the magazine on Seinfeld – I didn’t realize it was a real name people used!

The Marriage Story actress seemed hesitant to share her baby’s name publicly, as she wanted to avoid any potential criticism. She went on to explain:

I kept it to myself because I didn’t want to deal with people’s reactions. You know, that look they give you when you share something unexpected, and they sort of pause and say, ‘Oh, that’s… unusual!’ It’s awkward, and you can just tell they don’t approve.

Look, I totally understand wanting to pick a baby name you and your partner love without anyone else interfering – it’s a huge deal! It’s clear Scarlett and Colin were really happy with the name they chose, so it felt a little harsh when Colin’s mom started suggesting other options, honestly. It just seemed like a really special moment, and that could have taken away from it.

Hopefully, when Scarlett Johansson’s mother-in-law finally met her grandson – who seems to have a great sense of humor just like his father – she liked his name and changed her mind about it.

Celebrities generally prefer to start trends rather than follow them, so they usually don’t pick baby names based on popularity lists. Expect to see more unique names like North West, Apple Martin, and plenty of Finns in the future.
