Scarlett Johansson denies involvement in Thunderbolts*

Scarlett Johansson, who’s played Natasha Romanoff/ Black Widow since 2010 by Marvel Studios, was initially given executive producer credit for the upcoming film Thunderbolts. However, she clarified that she didn’t contribute to the movie’s production and requested her name be taken off the credits. Johansson also shared whether she watched the Black Widow successor Yelena Belova (played by Florence Pugh) in the movie and voiced her thoughts on it. Here’s what we know.

Johansson and David Harbour recently had a chat for Interview Magazine, during which they talked about their experiences with the MCU’s latest production. Harbour, who made his debut in the MCU as Red Guardian in ‘Black Widow’, jokingly referred to Johansson as an unofficial member of the Thunderbolts, since her character was quite dynamic throughout the movie.

He conveyed, “Today marks the premiere of a film where you’re essentially the seventh Thunderbolt to appear. Your role is prominently featured throughout the movie… You hold the title of executive producer for this project. Hearty congratulations!

Regarding this, the actress from Jurassic World Rebirth responded that she requested Marvel Studios to take her name off the Executive Producer (EP) credits because she hadn’t actually taken part in the production process.

Johansson first appeared in the Marvel Cinematic Universe during Iron Man 2 and has since played a significant role among the original Avengers. In Endgame, she demonstrated remarkable courage by giving up her life to obtain the Soul Stone. Even though she’s no longer part of the MCU, her name appearing in the credits as an executive producer indicates there may be contractual obligations at play. Nevertheless, Marvel Studios has not yet clarified the true explanation behind the executive producer credit.

In a playful manner, Harbour asked if Johansson truly disliked the movie that intensely. Laughing, she clarified that it wasn’t about hating the film, but rather that he seemed to want her to feel that way. Later, Harbour suggested she might take pride in their work, to which Johansson confirmed that she already did.

On May 2, 2025, the film “Thunderbolts” was launched, and it has raked in more than $375 million worldwide. However, this earnings figure places it among the less successful box office performances by the MCU compared to its other high-grossing films.
