Saw XI and The Monkey among the 24 scary movies we cannot wait to see in 2025

Saw XI and The Monkey among the 24 scary movies we cannot wait to see in 2025

As a die-hard horror fan who has spent countless nights huddled under blankets, peeking through my fingers during each new release, I can’t help but feel a mix of excitement and apprehension about the upcoming horrorscapes of 2025.

As we move past the midpoint of 2024, it’s high time to peer into the future towards 2025, a year that promises a thrilling lineup of horror movies. Next year looks set to be an exciting one for fans of long-running franchises with fresh installments in classic series such as Scream, Insidious, The Conjuring, Saw, and others. Here are some upcoming films we’re eagerly waiting for in 2025.

28 Years Later (Jun. 20)

Approximately two decades since the last installment, the series revives with the original masterminds Danny Boyle and Alex Garland at the helm once more. It’s rumored that Cillian Murphy will reprise his role as well, making this project a highly anticipated return.

The Black Phone sequel (Oct. 17)

In this continuation, Ethan Hawke once again takes on the role of The Grabber, following up from the 2021 movie adaptation of Joe Hill’s short story with the same title. At present, details about the sequel are scarce, but it has been confirmed that the original film’s cast will be returning to their respective roles.

The Bride! (Sept. 26)

Maggie Gyllenhaal helms this chilling sci-fi horror flick, drawing inspiration from the 1935 classic Bride of Frankenstein. The film showcases a stellar ensemble, with Penélope Cruz, Christian Bale, Jessie Buckley, Peter Sarsgaard, and Annette Bening among its talented stars.

Saw XI (Sept. 26)

Initially planned for a late 2024 premiere, the eleventh movie in the Saw series has been delayed until 2025. With the impressive success of Saw X, the first film in the franchise to receive critical praise, the upcoming film faces high expectations. Producers have hinted that Saw XI will serve as a direct continuation of Saw X, wisely reprising Tobin Bell as John Kramer and Shawnee Smith as Amanda Young.

M3GAN 2.0 (Jun. 27)

The robotic breakdancing assassin doll named M3GAN will return for a follow-up film, given its initial box office success. Additionally, another installment tentatively titled SOULM8TE is underway and slated for release in 2026.

Five Nights At Freddy’s sequel (Dec. 5)

As a passionate fan myself, I can’t help but acknowledge the diverse responses to “Five Nights at Freddy’s” from both critics and fellow enthusiasts. Some were disheartened that it veered towards a more kid-friendly/beginner-level horror experience. However, despite these mixed opinions, the film undeniably became an enormous success.

Overall, the franchise has accumulated millions through its continuous release of new games, merchandise, and more. Already, Jim Henson’s Creature Shop is busy developing the sequel, offering glimpses into the upcoming sequel with early photographs that hint at the return of toy versions of the beloved animatronics.

The Monkey (Feb. 21)

Fresh from directing one of the top-grossing horror films of 2024, Longlegs, Oz Perkins is now set to direct this adaptation of a Stephen King short story for Neon. The movie features Theo James, Tatiana Maslany, and Elijah Wood in leading roles.

Insidious 6 (Aug. 29)

Contrary to earlier speculations suggesting a temporary hiatus from the Insidious series by Blumhouse, it seems they’re not stepping away after all. What was initially billed as the final installment, Insidious: The Red Door, didn’t quite live up to its billing, instead setting new franchise records at the box office.

I Know What You Did Last Summer sequel (Jul. 18)

As a devoted admirer, I can’t help but express my enthusiasm for the upcoming chapter in the ’90s teen slasher series, “I Know What You Did Last Summer,” masterfully revisited by Jenn Kaytin Robertson, the director of “Do Revenge.” This intriguing sequel/reboot promises to be a thrilling continuation of the original. Interestingly, Jennifer Love Hewitt and Freddie Prinze Jr., iconic stars from the original film, are reportedly in discussions to reprise their roles. Here’s hoping we can get Brandy on board soon as well!

The Conjuring 4: Last Rites (Sept. 5)

A franchise produced by James Wan, namely The Conjuring series, is said to conclude in 2025. However, I find it hard to accept this assertion. At least, this fourth installment appears to be the final part of the original movies that began with the 2013 film. It might be our last chance to witness Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga as Ed and Lorraine Warren on screen.

Scream 7 (TBA)

The final installment of the Carpenters sisters story, expected to be a joyful and victorious conclusion, unfortunately faced negative attention because production company Spyglass decided to dismiss the actress, Melissa Barrera, who portrayed Sam Carpenter in the earlier movies.

Jenna Ortega has shared that she won’t rejoin for Scream 7. Instead, the focus will shift back to Sidney’s story, with Neve Campbell set to return and Courteney Cox appearing once more as Gale Weathers. Although many fans are thrilled about Sidney’s comeback, some of us who had become deeply interested in the franchise’s recent evolution led by Barrera may feel a bit let down since she won’t be part of it anymore.
