New horror movie The Ugly Stepsister has landed an excellent first trailer.
The movie, referred to by Mashable as “extremely violent,” is a dark reinterpretation of the classic tale Cinderella. It’s directed by Emilie Blichfeldt and features Lea Myren as the lead character Elvira. In this version, Elvira takes drastic and gruesome measures to win the prince’s heart.
A trailer for the horror has now been released, giving fans a Substance-type vibe as large letters and pulsing techno music ask if audiences ever feel “inferior”, “unworthy”, “ashamed”, “rejected”, “alone”, “scared”, “unloved”, “invisible” and “ugly”.

Additionally, we encounter Elvira, who suffers mistreatment upon her entrance into an imposing mansion, leading to a disturbing sequence that involves her nose being cruelly modified.
In the video, viewers witness a sequence of shocking visuals depicting her going through grueling treatments in an attempt to be the epitome of elegance at the upcoming ball.
The movie debuted at the Sundance Film Festival all the way back in January and has since received broad praise, with a rating of 97% on Rotten Tomatoes.

In a nutshell, the play titled “The Ugly Stepsister” is shockingly violent but also surprisingly captivating.
“Instead of whimsical romance set in the Renaissance, Blichfeldt gets graphic with the medieval torture women endure in their pursuit of happily ever after,” wrote Bloody Disgusting. “It’s elegant, stylish, and gnarly.”
As a gamer, I’d say: “Wow, the AV Club really nailed it with their review of Emilie Blichfeldt’s first film. It’s a twisted take on Cinderella that’s darker than a Grimm fairy tale!
“Contrasting how her female characters feel with the expectations men put on them, Blichfeldt makes clear that impossible beauty standards are the unfairest of them all, whether in the real world or this twisted fictional kingdom,” wrote Variety.
The Ugly Stepsister will be released in UK cinemas on April 10.
