Saturday Night Live UK gets major boost ahead of season one debut

After nearly 50 years of popularity in the United States, the UK version of Saturday Night Live is finally debuting tonight, and the show is already off to a good start!

I’m so excited about the UK version of SNL! It was originally going to be just six episodes, but now Variety is reporting it’s been extended to eight! Each episode will be 75 minutes long, and apparently, the writers and cast are working hard a week before each show, writing and rehearsing everything, then filming it live with a real audience. It sounds amazing!

The new show premieres tonight at 10pm on Sky, and it’s being hosted by the talented Tina Fey, known for her work on Saturday Night Live (where she wrote and performed from 1997 to 2006). UK band Wet Leg will be performing as musical guests. Like most shows of this type, it will start with a monologue from Fey, then feature a mix of comedy sketches and a musical performance.

The new British version of Saturday Night Live will feature a different celebrity host and musical guest each week, just like the American show. Jamie Dornan, known for Fifty Shades of Grey and The Fall, will host the second episode with musical performance by Wolf Alice. Riz Ahmed, who starred in Rogue One and Sound of Metal, is scheduled to host on April 4th, with Kasabian providing the music. More hosts and musical guests will be revealed soon.

The show stars Hammed Animashaun, Ayoade Bamgboye, Larry Dean, Celeste Dring, George Fouracres, Ania Magliano, Annabel Marlow, Al Nash, Jack Shep, Emma Sidi, and Paddy Young.

Animashaun shared with The Independent that the show’s originality presents ongoing challenges, but he remained tight-lipped about specifics, saying viewers will have to tune in to find out what happens. He also confirmed the cast is fully prepared and eager to begin.

The announcement of the show included a statement explaining that the initial group of hosts, musical guests, and cast members signals an exciting new direction for the famous SNL franchise. It aims to combine the show’s long history with the talent of a new wave of British comedians.

Saturday Night Live UK is broadcast live on Sky at 10pm and streamed on NOW in the UK. In the U.S., you can watch it on Peacock starting the next day.
