Saturday Night Light drags House of the Dragon in "Blonde Dragon People"

As a lifelong fan of both Saturday Night Live and Game of Thrones, I can confidently say that this weekend’s SNL sketch about House of the Dragon was a masterpiece of comedic timing and clever satire. The way they poked fun at the complex character names, the long wait between seasons, and the ever-changing streaming app name had me in stitches. I mean, who doesn’t love a good joke about Legolas and Gimli showing up unannounced?

The iconic comedy show, “Saturday Night Live,” which has been on for a very long time, came back recently, and it couldn’t have returned at a better time as election season is becoming increasingly chaotic, a period when “SNL” often shines. Interestingly, the show also took aim at popular culture, specifically HBO’s upcoming series, the prequel to “Game of Thrones,” titled “House of the Dragon.

Originally, this scene was trimmed due to time constraints, but you can still view it at the top. In the realm depicted here, “House of the Dragon ” translates to “Blonde Dragon People“, presenting a somber medieval narrative filled with characters sharing strikingly similar names. One spectator wonders aloud, “Why are so many individuals and cities labeled with such peculiar names?” To which another remarks, “Even “Game of Thrones” introduced one character named Jon.

The names on House of the Dragon can indeed get a little nuts: I mean, there are three separate characters named Rhaenyra, Rhaenys and Rhaena. The sketch’s biggest point is that these particulars are especially hard to remember when the wait between new seasons is so long; the first season of House of the Dragon aired in 2022 and the second wrapped up just the other month. And let’s not forget that the second only had eight episodes compared to 10 in the first season. “That was the whole season?!?” one fan laments.

The sketch also mocks how often HBO and Warner Bros. Discovery have changed the name of their streaming app. “You see it was HBO. Then it was HBO Now. Then HBO Go. And then HBO Max. And now it’s just Max.” “Hm, sounds bad.” And finally, Legolas and Gimli from The Lord of the Rings show up at the end for good measure.

I found James Austin Johnson’s acting impressive, playing a character reminiscent of a Daemon, complete with an uncrackable accent. Additionally, he delivered the line, “On what grounds do you assert ownership over the chair adorned with sharp blades?

The Simpsons parodies the Game of Thrones series finale

Previously, Saturday Night Live had already satirized House of the Dragon. They mockingly portrayed its initial season at an earlier point in time as well.

Over the weekend, numerous spoofs based on “Game of Thrones” were prevalent. In its season 36 debut, “Bart’s Birthday”, The Simpsons satirized the series finale of “Game of Thrones”, titled “The Iron Throne”.

As a gamer, I can’t help but feel flattered when I see myself being imitated in such creative ways, even if the spoofs aren’t always gentle. It means that my presence in the gaming community has left an indelible mark on its culture and spirit.
