Sarah Michelle Gellar turned down a chance to reprise fan-favourite ’90s role

Director of the movie “I Know What You Did Last Summer” revealed that Sarah Michelle Gellar declined an offer to reprise her role in the series’ follow-up, as per reports.

In the latest development, Freddie Prinze Jr., known for his role as Ray Bronson on Buffy, and Jennifer Love Hewitt, who portrayed Julie James, are set to return. However, Sarah Michelle Gellar’s character, Helen Shivers, does not seem to be part of the unexpected comeback this time around.

Indeed, the Fisherman was responsible for Helen’s death in the initial film, yet director Jennifer Kaytin Robinson made numerous attempts to persuade Sarah Gellar to reprise her role in the sequel.

The first movie showed that the Fisherman killed Helen. However, when it came to making the sequel, director Jennifer Kaytin Robinson really wanted Sarah Gellar back, but she tried hard to convince her.

In a recent chat with Entertainment Weekly, she quipped, “I did my best! I bothered her terribly! But, you know, it was all in jest because she’s no longer here.” She also attempted to propose some outrageous ideas.

I said, “Suppose you’re not truly deceased, but instead hiding somewhere?” To which Sarah responded, “I was cryogenically preserved. I was as good as dead as anyone could be. Look at my frozen corpse.

“I was like, ‘Yeah, but what if?’ And she said, ‘I am dead. I am Sarah Dead Gellar’.”

In the latest movie trailer, she makes a short appearance, with the camera focusing on the graves of Helen and her sister Elsa.

Similar to the 1997 horror film, its sequel revolves around a quintet of friends being hunted by a murderer armed with a hook, a year following their attempt to conceal a fatal car crash incident.

Yet, they find out that this terror had occurred previously, and they seek aid from the two individuals who survived the 1997 Southport Massacre – Ray and Julie.

Besides Hewitt and Prince Jr., the forthcoming slasher movie also features Madelyn Cline, Chase Sui Wonders, Jonah Hauer-King, Sarah Pidgeon, and Tyriq Withers in its star-studded cast.

The ensemble is completed by Billy Campbell, Gabriette Bechtel, Austin Nichols, Lola Tung, and Nicholas Alexander Chavez. (Ensemble means group in this context)

I Know What You Did Last Summer is released in cinemas on 18 July.
