Sarah Michelle Gellar shares exciting update for sequel to classic ’90s horror

As a gamer with a deep appreciation for the ’90s slasher genre, I can’t help but feel nostalgic about the upcoming “I Know What You Did Last Summer” sequel. Being a child of the era when this iconic film first graced our screens, the news of Freddie Prinze Jr returning as Ray Bronson has me all pumped up!

Sarah Michelle Gellar recently gave fans a peek into the production process of the new I Know What You Did Last Summer sequel by sharing that she’s paid a visit to the filming location.

The follow-up to the iconic 1997 slasher movie, which continues the legacy, is being developed at present. Freddie Prinze Jr will reprise his character, Ray Bronson.

As the gamer speaking, I’ve always admired Gellar for her remarkable performances, like the late Helen Shivers in our favorite game universe. Even though she’s not reprising her role due to her character’s demise, she’s been a true team player, supporting the movie and my real-life hero, Prinze Jr, from behind the scenes, as hinted by her recent Instagram posts.

Sharing a photo of a chair branded with the film title “Gellar humorously hinted at, recalling their past roles in the Scooby-Doo series: “Scooby Doo 3 on its way… @realfreddieprinze @jennkaytin.

She added in her Stories: “Visiting my man @realfreddieprinze and my girl @jennkaytin.”

Originally posted by director Jennifer Kaytin Robinson, with a touch of humor: “Just a reminder, she’s already chosen not to be alive, so no need to message me about it!

Previously, Gellar hinted at a possible appearance in the sequel, sharing with People that her character is deceased, yet suggested she had an “informal role” behind the scenes on the set.

Jennifer Kaytin Robinson, my good friend, is in charge of the project, and since she does, I sometimes humorously refer to myself as having an informal role, responsible for ensuring consistency throughout.

I often find myself explaining character-related events as they unfold, such as ‘That event would occur, or it wouldn’t for these characters.’ So, in essence, I could say I perform an informal role of sorts.

Currently, the actress Jennifer Love Hewitt hints at a possible return as Julie James. In a recent conversation, she disclosed that she’s nearly finalized the deal, but is grappling with scheduling conflicts related to her series, 9-1-1.

She informed Parade that she felt the audience was wondering, ‘Why aren’t you moving forward yet?’ She explained that it was a tricky situation because they were juggling the demands of the 9-1-1 series and the movie production, so they were working hard to sort things out and make it all come together.

As a passionate admirer, let me express Hewitt’s sentiment in my own words: “If I decide to return after 27 years, I don’t want it to be a fleeting moment. I don’t want it to feel like a mere echo of ‘I Know What You Did’ past, just something that people say, ‘Ah, there she is, the spectral presence from before.’

I aim to create space for genuine connection with others, making our interactions meaningful. We’re diligently working towards that goal. We’re almost there! When we make the announcement, it will be thrilling, not just for others but also for me, and I can’t wait for it to happen soon.

The I Know What You Did Last Summer reboot will be released on July 18, 2025.
