Sarah Michelle Gellar reveals Buffy the Vampire Slayer update following New Sunnydale confusion

Sarah Michelle Gellar has addressed fan curiosity about the upcoming Buffy the Vampire Slayer series, clarifying that it won’t be a continuation of the original story.

Sarah Michelle Gellar will return as Buffy Summers in a continuation of the popular TV series, and will star alongside Ryan Kiera Armstrong, who will play a new Slayer.

The new series, Buffy The Vampire Slayer: New Sunnydale, comes from the writers of Poker Face, Lilla and Nora Zuckerman, and Oscar-winning director Chloé Zhao. The title nods to the original show’s setting, Sunnydale, where Buffy battled vampires and demons.

In an appearance on the Shut Up Evan podcast, Sarah Michelle Gellar clarified that the new project isn’t a sequel or a reboot, but rather a continuation of the original story.

The show’s star and executive producer says it will answer some lingering questions from the original series, such as Buffy’s current location and the nature of the world she inhabits, both with and without her presence.

“So it’s not a reboot, it’s not picking up with all of the same characters right away. It is not like a sequel … That’s why the name was even important to me — Buffy: New Sunnydale. It’s Buffy, but it’s also something else,” Gellar said of the new series, whose pilot was commissioned by Hulu last year.

I was so surprised to hear Sarah Michelle Gellar talk about working with Chloe Zhao! She said meeting Chloe was actually the first time she even thought about playing Buffy again, which is wild considering she’d said for years she was done with the role. It’s amazing to think one conversation could change her mind!

She explained that the project is taking time because they want to be absolutely certain it meets their goals and is worthwhile before offering it to customers. They don’t want to release something that isn’t fully developed and beneficial.

I won’t release something until I’m completely satisfied with it, and I need to be sure it meets my standards before I do.

Buffy The Vampire Slayer: New Sunnydale doesn’t have a release date.
