Sarah Michelle Gellar responds to rumors that she’s reprising her role for I Know What You Did Last Summer reboot
As a long-time fan of the horror genre, I am genuinely thrilled to see the return of one of my favorite ’90s slasher films, “I Know What You Did Last Summer.” The news that Sarah Michelle Gellar will be reprising her role as Julie James is nothing short of exhilarating.
It’s been buzzing among fans that Sarah Michelle Gellar might step back into the role of Helen Shivers for the forthcoming revival of I Know What You Did Last Summer.
As the movie’s release date approaches, the actress announced that she won’t appear in the upcoming horror film (slasher flick); however, her husband, Freddie Prinze Jr., is a key member of the cast.
In a strong statement to People, Gellar clarified that her character, famously known for dying in the iconic 1997 horror movie, is no longer alive.
Although Gellar won’t appear on screen in the reboot, she believes she may have a role behind-the-scenes due to her friend, Jennifer Kaytin Robinson, being both writer and director for the reboot, and her husband returning to play Ray Bronson again.
She playfully mentioned that although [Jennifer Kaytin Robinson] is the director, she has an informal role – ensuring continuity. In other words, she’s the one who points out to her, “That seems right or wrong for these characters,” so she essentially serves as a kind of continuity consultant without an official title on paper.

The initial movie, inspired by Lois Duncan’s 1973 book with the same title, primarily revolved around four adolescent companions being pursued by a murderer armed with a hook. This terrifying ordeal occurred a year after they had supposedly covered up an automobile accident in which they might have unintentionally taken a man’s life.
The main cast included Sarah Michelle Gellar, Freddie Prinze Jr., Jennifer Love Hewitt, Ryan Phillippe, Johnny Galecki, Bridgette Wilson, and Anne Heche. Sadly, Anne Heche passed away in August 2022 at the age of 53.
Under the direction of Jim Gillespie and using a screenplay penned by Kevin Williamson, I Know What You Did Last Summer turned out to be a blockbuster success among cinema-goers. It raked in an impressive $125.3 million at global box offices, surpassing its production budget of $17 million.
In an effort to capitalize on the triumph of the initial movie, the second installment titled I Still Know What You Did Last Summer was released approximately a year later, in November, featuring the return of Hewitt, Prinze Jr., and Watson to their respective roles.
For the sequel, the original three actors were accompanied by a group of fresh faces: Brandy, Mekhi Phifer, Bill Cobbs, Jennifer Esposito, Matthew Settle, John Hawkes, Jeffrey Combs, and Benjamin Brown (and several others) were added to the team.
Danny Cannon served as the director and Trey Callaway wrote the screenplay, but in the end the sequel flopped at the box office, earning just $40 million after spending between$25-65 million on production costs.
About ten years after its initial release, the third movie in the I’ll Always Know What You Did Last Summer series came out in 2006. However, unlike the first two films, it didn’t have any big-name actors, as none from those movies appeared in it. Consequently, this film functioned as a standalone sequel.
Together with Prinze Jr., aged 48, and the main actress Hewitt, also 45, it has been confirmed that they will be returning to their roles for the upcoming films. In the ’90s, they portrayed Julie James and can be seen in the initial two movies from the series.
In February 2023, it was initially revealed that the upcoming sequel would combine characters from the original movie with a fresh set of actors portraying younger versions.
Among the fresh faces joining the team, as I’ve gleefully learned, are Madelyn Cline, Chase Sui Wonders, Jonah Haur-King, Sarah Pidgeo, and Tyriq Withers – at least, that’s what Variety reports! Initially, Camila Mendes was slated for the role, but unfortunately, she had to back out due to some scheduling issues.
Jen has assembled a truly fantastic group of actors, and I couldn’t be more thrilled and eager for them,” Gellar expressed to People about the reboot. “I’ll be there offering encouragement from behind the scenes.

Even though she’s not part of the new reboot, Sarah Michelle Gellar remains eager to offer her backing to the production team in whatever capacity they need.
She mentioned that since her husband is featured in the film and her close friend was the writer and director, it seems likely that she’ll attend the premiere.
Gella and Prinze Jr. initially crossed paths on the movie set, leading them to date for two decades before getting married in September 2022. Over the course of their 22-year union, they were blessed with a daughter, Charlotte (age 14), and a son, Rocky (age 11).
The updated version of “I Know What You Did Last Summer” is set to premiere in American cinemas on July 18, 2025.
