Sarah Lancashire’s Black Doves character is different to anything she’s done before

As a gamer who has seen more than my fair share of spy shows and movies, I must say that “Black Doves” is a refreshing addition to the genre. Sarah Lancashire’s portrayal of Reed is captivating, to say the least. Her character is complex, layered, and full of nuance – something we don’t often see in spy characters, especially female ones.

The debut of Sarah Lancashire onto streaming platforms is marked by “Black Doves,” a much-awaited espionage series set to premiere on Netflix on December 5th.

Previously known for her role on the BBC’s hit crime show “Happy Valley,” the actress has revealed that her character, Reed from “Black Doves,” presents a unique acting challenge as it differs significantly from any roles she’s tackled before.

Prior to the series’ premiere, Lancashire was queried about his experience portraying the character of Reed.

She stated that playing her character was unique because she hadn’t encountered anyone quite like her before. This role is intriguing as the character appears self-sufficient, yet there’s a deep sense of emotion hidden within. Due to dedicating her prime years to an organization which may have deprived her of a spouse, children, family, and friends, the storyline carries a somber tone. There’s a palpable air of melancholy surrounding her. The challenge lies in showing that she can’t let go; if she does, it will reveal everything. Essentially, she must remain strong and steadfast for everyone else.

The BAFTA award-winner was further questioned about what attracted her to the part, and she explained that it was quite straightforward or easily understandable.

Lancashire commented on the exceptional talent of writer Joe Barton, praising his remarkable and elegant storytelling.

She went on to say, “It was completely unique from anything I had seen before. It was tight, intelligent, and full of wit, which is a truly captivating mix. This work not only gripped me physically and emotionally, but I believe Reed’s brilliance was already evident in the text itself.

I find the artwork absolutely superb, as the grammar is meticulously crafted – both precise and exacting. I believe this detail was key in discovering her.

Besides Keira Knightley and Ben Whishaw, the movie Black Doves features an impressive ensemble cast that includes Omari Douglas from It’s a Sin, Andrew Buchan known for his role in Broadchurch, and Adeel Akhtar, who starred in Fool Me Once.

Black Doves will release on Netflix on December 5.
