Sarah Jessica Parker and Andy Cohen, who have been friends for a long time, publicly expressed their concern after the Pride flag was taken down at The Stonewall Inn in New York City on Wednesday.
Kristin Davis, known for her role in Sex and the City, and Andy Cohen, host of Watch What Happens Live, both age 57 and 60 respectively, posted a video on Instagram expressing their disappointment with President Trump’s decision to remove the flag from the Stonewall National Monument, a site honoring LGBTQ+ history.
Parker questioned whether taking down the flag would make people stop caring, forget what happened, or cease their advocacy, saying he was simply curious about the likely outcome.
We’re demanding the return of our flag, but removing it doesn’t erase our history, our community, or the bonds we share.
The video showed Christopher Park, home of the Stonewall National Monument, with three Pride flags visible.
In the caption, she wrote, ‘X, SJ and Andy.’
Cohen previously posted on Instagram, strongly criticizing Trump’s actions with a highly offensive statement.
Following a January directive from the Trump administration, the flag was removed because federal guidance prohibited the display of flags not officially affiliated with government agencies within the National Park system.
In June 2016, the Stonewall Inn, famous as the location of the 1969 riots that sparked the contemporary LGBTQ+ rights movement, was officially recognized as a national monument.
On Tuesday, protesters gathered at the Stonewall National Monument to express their anger over the removal of a rainbow banner. Many carried signs declaring, ‘You can’t erase our history.’
Manhattan Borough President Brad Hoylman-Sigal stated in an interview on Tuesday that he and other New York City officials plan to put the flag back up this Thursday.
The Stonewall riots began in the summer when the New York City Police raided the Stonewall Inn, a popular gay bar, and forcibly removed its patrons, sparking six days of protests.
Sarah Jessica Parker, famous for her role as Carrie Bradshaw in Sex and the City and And Just Like That…, has been a dedicated supporter of LGBT rights for many years.
She explained that she was thankful the show quickly connected with and gained support from the LGBTQ+ community, fostering a sense of camaraderie and belonging.
‘That there was a natural affinity and affection made sense to me, and we were really grateful,’ she added.
She also spoke about the climate under the Trump administration.
Honestly, it feels really difficult to even talk about what happened with the show right now. Bringing it up just seems to minimize the very real and deep hurt so many people are going through, and that doesn’t feel right to me.
Honestly, what I love most is how genuinely real this show makes the community feel. It’s not just a backdrop, it’s woven into everything the characters do, and it feels so authentic to how people actually connect and live their lives. It’s just… wonderful to see that kind of representation, you know? It feels like they get it.
The real story is how deeply connected we all are. It’s incredible to think about the impact people in this community have had on so many lives, often in ways we don’t even realize.
This behavior is not only unfair and deeply upsetting, but it’s also needlessly harsh, and those engaging in it are acting regrettably.
