As a film enthusiast who grew up watching MTV’s “The Real World,” I was deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Sarah Becker, a beloved and memorable cast member from Season 5. Her time on the show left an indelible mark on me, and I fondly remember her tomboyish demeanor, her side business delivering restaurant supplies, and the drama she brought to the house in the Bahamas with her roommate and the puppy Leroy.
Sadly, Sarah Becker, who featured in MTV’s popular reality TV series “The Real World” during its fifth season, passed away at the age of 52.
I heard from TMZ that Becker took her own life. Her loved ones shared that she had relocated from California to Illinois to look after her family and was dealing with both mental health issues and recovering from a skateboarding injury at the time.
Prior to appearing on a reality show in 1996, she had previously worked at Wildstorm Comics located in La Jolla. Known for her tomboyish demeanor, Becker once referred to herself in a “Real World” advertisement as a “19-year-old stuck inside a 25-year-old’s frame.”
During her tenure on the program, Becker made a strong impression through her endeavors outside of the show, such as running a business that supplied restaurants with necessary items. She also experienced a heated dispute with her roommate, engaged in a confrontation with another housemate, enjoyed a vacation in the Bahamas, and welcomed a new pet named Leroy into her home.
Her former castmates expressed their condolences via social media.
“I’m deeply saddened and shocked to learn that my roommate Sarah passed away. I held Sarah in high regard for her kindness, selflessness, and helpfulness.”
I’ve gone years without talking to her, unaware of the struggles she faced. My sympathies are with her loved ones during this difficult time. Farewell, my former roommate and dear friend. May you find eternal peace and be free from suffering.
“Farewell, Becker. May you find peace and joy beyond this world, according to Cynthia Roberts’ Instagram post featuring a current image of him.”
“Sarah and I hadn’t exchanged words since our show ended, leaving me uninformed about her hardships. The strange, intense, and sometimes distressing journey we shared as a cast of seven left an indelible mark on us. Even when individuals decide to distance themselves, the bond forged during such experiences is deeply felt. It’s truly unfortunate.”
Joe Patane paid tribute to her on Facebook, acknowledging her commitment to transforming into a life coach before earning her license as a marriage and family therapist. Through this work, she aimed to assist others while potentially gaining a greater understanding of her own mental health issues.
“Although suicide is not a solution, may she have found tranquility. Let us all support each other in grieving, showing love, and continuing to live vibrantly.”
