Saoirse Ronan claims Paul Mescal, Eddie Redmayne and Denzel Washington were ‘humbled’ by her comments on violence against women on The Graham Norton Show
As an ardent admirer of Saoirse Ronan, I find myself utterly captivated by her unwavering courage and eloquence. The way she effortlessly weaves conversations about gender-based violence into everyday discussions is truly inspiring. Her recent comments on The Graham Norton Show have not only started a much-needed conversation but also left the likes of Paul Mescal, Eddie Redmayne, and Denzel Washington humbled.
Saoirse Ronan shared that Paul Mescal, Eddie Redmayne, and Denzel Washington felt humbled following her remarks about women’s safety during an appearance on The Graham Norton Show.
During her latest performance on the program, the 30-year-old actress sparked a buzz on social media with her comment regarding violence against women.
Responding to Paul’s query about using a phone as a weapon during an attack, Meryl Streep (Little Women star) expressed that such a consideration is something women often ponder regularly.
The brutally honest comment prompted a moment of silence from the panel.
She posed a question to the group, asking, “Is that correct?”, which was met with a thunderous applause from the excited audience in the studio.
On an episode of the Table Manners with Jessie Ware podcast, Saoirse admitted that she wasn’t anticipating the interview’s widespread popularity as it turned out to be.

She expressed: “I wasn’t anticipating such a response, but I’m remarkably rejuvenated and pleased. I believe we can approach this situation with composure. It’s important to remember the context; the others didn’t catch my remarks initially, then asked, ‘What are you referring to?’ They were taken aback.” (or simply: “They were humbled.”)
After the interview, Saoirse felt concerned that she might have given an unpleasant impression. Shortly afterward, she met up with Paul for a drink.
She mentioned that the majority of the production is complete, but it has been trimmed down. After wrapping up filming, she had a drink with Paul and admitted that she couldn’t stop thinking about it.
Initially, I felt I’d messed up that evening as I couldn’t recall anything discussed. After the event aired, I grew apprehensive. Later on, two days post-event, my friend mentioned that many people were reaching out to him regarding a remark I made about the phone.
I’m really appreciative that my comment sparked a discussion which is clearly important and necessary.
She stated: ‘I believe I had an honest moment that made me feel guilty. But then I reasoned, no, no, it’s not appropriate to continue like that.’
Since I engage in similar conversations with both my female and male friends, including Paul Mescal, here.
The females around me aren’t shy about sharing their stories, and I’ve always been open to hearing them.

It comes after Paul spoke out about Saoirse’s comments, saying she was ‘spot on’.
On Irish broadcaster RTE’s The Late Late Show, I was asked point-blank if I was taken aback by the response my work has been receiving. But honestly, I’ve been overwhelmed with excitement and gratitude – it’s beyond what I could have ever imagined!
He replied: ‘No, I wouldn’t say we were taken aback, as your presence here on a talk show is to be expected, and you’re essentially engaging in conversation.’
However, I wasn’t taken aback by the message garnering as much attention as it did, given its immense importance. I’m confident you’ve invited Saoirse onto your show before, and she’s typically one of the sharpest minds around, often standing out in a crowd.
‘But I think she… was spot on, hit the nail on the head, and it’s also good that … messages like that are kind of gaining traction, like that’s a conversation that we should absolutely be having on a daily basis.’
In simpler terms, The actor from Normal People, Paul, who has received an Oscar nomination for the drama Aftersun, is now appearing in the eagerly awaited sequel to Gladiator, titled Gladiator II.
Saoirse appeared in The Outrun, about a women struggling with alcoholism, early this year.
