Sandra Bernhard says it ‘really makes me sad’ that she and Madonna stopped being friends after their mysterious falling-out
As an ardent admirer of the vibrant and captivating world of 80s entertainment, I find myself deeply moved by Sandra Bernhard‘s poignant reminiscence of her once-cherished friendship with the enigmatic Madonna. The image of their camaraderie, as vividly portrayed in the iconic moments they shared, is etched indelibly within the annals of pop culture history.
Sandra Bernhard shared that it truly saddens her they couldn’t keep up their friendship with Madonna.
In the ’80s, while performing on Broadway in New York City, the pop artist and the comedienne forged a well-known friendship that resembled girlfriends.
1988 saw a memorable television instance as Madonna and Sandra shared the stage on Late Night With David Letterman, donning identical outfits and playfully engaging in mutual flirting.
By 1992, there was a strange disappearance of their strong connection, leaving many wondering about the cause. Gossip has persisted over the years.
Currently, Sandra reminisces nostalgically over her ‘ideal moments’ with Madonna, during an episode of Jesse Tyler Ferguson’s podcast titled “Dinner’s On Me.”
Their friendship began in the year 1988, as they were mutually acquainted during Madonna’s stint in David Mamet’s Broadway production of Speed The Plow.
Simultaneously, Sandra was giving a one-woman performance in an off-Broadway play titled “Without You I’m Nothing.” Not long after, she transformed this production into a film.
After over three decades since their friendship ended, Sandra expressed that she would handle quite well if she were to meet Madonna once more.
She expressed, “However, I’m not sure what exactly it would be, you understand? And I dislike dwelling too much on those memories and reminiscing about that era, as it was almost like a golden age for me,” she remarked, reflecting on her life and career during the late 1980s, with numerous appearances on Letterman and a thriving stage show.
She expressed, “At times, I feel a deep sense of sorrow because we weren’t able to keep our friendship going. To be honest, I could have made an effort to preserve it.”
Previously, Sandra’s intimate confidant, the renowned fashion designer Isaac Mizrahi, put forth an intriguing hypothesis suggesting a love triangle was likely the cause of her estrangement from pop icon Madonna.
Isaac claimed that Sandra was romantically involved with the popular nightclub proprietor Ingrid Casares, who later reportedly had a relationship with Madonna.
“He mentioned on the Hot Takes & Deep Dives podcast that he wasn’t certain about the relationship between Madonna and Sandra. Since Madonna identifies as pansexual, it was unclear to him if they were romantically involved or if Madonna had romantic intentions towards Sandra’s girlfriend, Ingrid, who was particularly attractive.”
In the 1990s, Ingrid gained significant prominence in the media world, circulating among her famous companions like Donald Trump and Tommy Mottola, creating quite a buzz.
It was previously stated that Sandra and Madonna had a disagreement due to the fact that Sandra wasn’t invited to model for Madonna’s “Sex” book.
Instead, Isaac contested Ingrid’s account of the situation, asserting that it was actually Sandra who was deceived since Madonna had been unfaithful to Ingrid.
He firmly believed that Sandra didn’t have much interest, if any, in the Sex book, and he had never noticed her showing a wish or ambition to become one of its models.
To be completely honest, I didn’t find that book all that captivating. It seemed a tad artificial, as if it were constructed more for effect than genuine storytelling.
A year ago, when Sandra graced the very same podcast, she tiptoed around the ending of our friendship with Madonna. However, she subtly suggested that the intense media glare took its toll on us.
The Roseanne actress expressed her discomfort with the level of public scrutiny and constant maintenance required, saying, “We all have our degrees of work, but as an improvisational person, I don’t enjoy feeling bound by maintaining a specific image for myself.”
Sandra expressed: “In our friendship, I’ve been trying to convey: ‘I am truly here for you, not just a temporary presence.'”
In contemplation, it seemed that for some time, we truly shared a meaningful bond. However, maintaining such a connection with her proves challenging. She prefers to keep others at arm’s length who mirrors aspects of herself too closely. Consequently, her relationships often fail to endure.
