Samuel L Jackson’s Netflix movie debuts with 100% Rotten Tomatoes rating
As a gamer who has lived through countless cinematic adventures and epic quests, I must say that the anticipation for Samuel L Jackson’s latest film, “The Piano Lesson,” is reminiscent of the thrill before tackling a new level in an RPG game. With a perfect 100% score on Rotten Tomatoes, this movie seems to have all the right ingredients for a captivating story.
Samuel L Jackson’s new movie The Piano Lesson has debuted with a 100% score on Rotten Tomatoes.
The actor known for his roles in the “Star Wars” prequels and “The Incredibles” duology takes center stage in this new interpretation of August Wilson’s 1987 play. This production revolves around a Black family from the Great Depression era, who are torn apart by a dilemma regarding an heirloom piano – should they sell it to purchase land, or retain it due to its deep-seated emotional significance within the family?
The fresh adaptation of “The Piano Lesson“, featuring Ray Fisher from “Justice League“, Danielle Deadwyler of “P-Valley“, John David Washington from “The Creator“, Corey Hawkins of “24: Legacy“, Michael Potts from “Rustin“, and Erykah Badu, the renowned singer-songwriter, had its debut at the Telluride Film Festival before it hits theaters in November.
Based on the 13 reviews currently available, they’ve all been predominantly favorable, resulting in a perfect 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Here’s a taste of what some critics have to say about this movie:
TheWrap
Samuel L. Jackson delivers hilarious performance as Doaker and holds the production together. Meanwhile, Viola Davis is incredibly powerful, a shining talent of her generation. Nevertheless, John David Washington truly shines as Boy Willie, transforming into this character with a complex, multi-layered, and empathetic portrayal.
Variety
Although many of the actors are familiar from the Broadway production, it is clear that “The Piano Lesson” movie belongs to Deadwyler. In this role, Wilson crafted one of his most remarkable female characters, and Deadwyler brings a performance that simmers with intensity even in moments of silence. She manages to unearth depths that not even the author himself may have foreseen.
Entertainment Weekly
In his first directorial role, Malcolm Washington presents a compelling demonstration of his innovative and promising filmmaking abilities through the movie. Certain portions of “The Piano Lesson,” notably during the initial explanatory scenes, exhibit a somewhat theatrical quality due to its roots in stage production. However, overall, Washington skillfully magnifies and focuses on the world in distinctly cinematic manners.
The Hollywood Reporter
Deadwyler and Washington have a great chemistry. Their acting is especially engaging during the discussions about family inheritance between Boy Willie and Berniece. In one intense scene, Alexandre Desplat’s powerful music underscores the importance of their verbal exchanges. It’s also worth mentioning Corey Hawkins, who delivers an outstanding performance.
Screen Daily
At times, the eerie elements in Southern Gothic tales may seem disjointed, causing the plot to lose momentum because of the numerous characters and interwoven storylines. However, “The Piano Lesson” not only marks a powerful debut by Malcolm Washington, but also resonates profoundly with its portrayal of people with deep respect.
The Piano Lesson will have a brief cinema release in November, before streaming on Netflix.
