In a chat with AARP for its October/November 2024 edition, the 75-year-old Pulp Fiction actor shared insights on how he and his 74-year-old wife navigated marital hurdles, admitting to some extraordinary actions they’ve taken together throughout their relationship.
He admitted it takes ‘a lot of tolerance’ and ‘not giving up when it would be easy to give up’ – with his wife ‘learning to ignore’ his faults.
As a die-hard admirer of this legendary thespian, it’s not just his talent on stage and screen that captivates me; even his candid insights into life resonate deeply. Speaking about his partner, he commented, “You should ask, ‘Is this a sign of a breakup, or is it simply a matter of needing some space to understand the situation better?’
“Just as there are aspects of a person’s behavior I’ve learned not to focus on, she has done the same with me. One thing she eventually understood was my habit of going to work.
He mentioned his current acting career, stating, “I’ll be working almost constantly until it’s the right moment.
The couple celebrated their 44th wedding anniversary on August 18.
2022 found me passionately expressing to People magazine: “From the get-go, we championed a revolutionary ideal for Black communities – maintaining unity and nurturing our children within the core of having both a father and a mother. It’s easy to overlook this truth amidst societal misconceptions; some prefer to believe that African American families solely consist of children being raised by women. However, we all know this is a fallacy.
She emphasized, ‘In order to change that narrative, we made a decision to say, ‘We are going to stay together no matter what. We’ll figure it out.’
The pair crossed paths during their university years, with Jackson at Morehouse and Richardson at Spelman College.
In addition to their personal, familial tie, the husband and wife duo also work together.
In 2022, LaTanya took charge of guiding Samuel during the Broadway reprise of August Wilson’s play, “The Piano Lesson,” which was a musical production.
The film iteration is due in theaters on November 8, followed by a Netflix premiere on November 22.
The story unfolds in 1936 and centers around the Charles family living in the Doaker Charles household, as well as a valuable family heirloom – an old piano that carries the family’s history etched into its carvings by their ancestors who were once enslaved.
