Samia Longchambon and her Coronation Street co-stars are in ‘disbelief’ as top talent agent calls for her character to be axed from show
According to reports, Samia Longchambon and her fellow Coronation Street cast members seem shocked after a prominent talent agent suggested that her character should be removed from the series.
Melanie Blake manages a number of prominent actors from the show, such as Claire Sweeney, Jennie McAlpine, previous Coronation Street actress Claire King, and EastEnders’ Laila Morse.
As your trusted lifestyle guide, I recently posed a question on social media: “Which Corrie characters would you be thrilled to bid farewell from the cobbles? Let’s cast our votes. Please note that there’s no professional connection between me and those involved. So, who do you think needs an immediate exit, and which beloved figures should return? Choose one for each category and let’s keep it cordial!” For my pick, I’d say ‘Goodbye to Maria first!’ #OutWithTheOld
Samia, who has played Maria Connor on the soap since 2000, was said to be shocked by the post.
A source told The Mirror: ‘Samia’s friends and co-stars were in utter disbelief over the tweets.
It’s surprising, indeed, that an individual who is known for being a part of the acting talent on Coronation Street and often emphasizes helping her clients find work, would post such a disgusting tweet.
It seems like there have been a lot of intense situations lately, and Melanie’s recent tweet was quite out of line. She ought to be aware that such behavior isn’t appropriate.
Samia commented on Melanie’s post and wrote: ‘What have I ever done to you?’
In response, Melanie clarified that she held no ill feelings towards Samia, but rather expressed that she wouldn’t be disappointed if Maria, Samia’s character, was no longer part of the soap opera.
She wrote: “Darling, you haven’t made me upset, I’ve simply come to appreciate ‘Maria’ as a character over time. However, her storylines don’t seem to align with what I personally need to stay engaged – considering that it appears the show is planning to reduce its cast.
As a lifestyle enthusiast, I must express my personal preference regarding the television show we both follow. Personally, I’ve always found Maria’s storyline less engaging compared to the captivating character of Gary. Given the abundance of characters and the youthful attractiveness and talent that you exude, I chose to focus more on Gary’s narrative because it piques my interest more. This is simply a reflection of my personal preferences.
Later on, Melanie brought up news articles suggesting that actors might get dismissed from Coronation Street due to budget reductions.
In a different wording: “I’d be just as thrilled if you continued writing more stories that are ‘Maria-inspired.’ I believe these could sway my perspective, as your skill has always been undeniable – it’s the relevance of the characters in today’s context that I question. You can see discussions about character reductions on social media, and for me, this character is at risk unless you have fresh, unseen material to share soon!
Additionally, there were others whom I would have mentioned earlier, but they had already departed – moved on – not specifically addressed in any manner, shape, or form; rather, their presence lingered like a faint taste.
As a die-hard fan, I implore everyone to keep our discussions focused on the shows we love, particularly during these exciting reboot periods. Instead of veering off into personal commentary, let’s stick to analyzing the characters, plot twists, and the ever-changing dynamics of the fictional soap world that draws us together. That’s what being a soap fan is all about!
Samia didn’t find Melanie’s reply satisfactory and responded instead: “In essence, you’re suggesting I should be let go. Not a personal matter, just a professional one. Thanks, Melanie. All the best to you.
Melanie responded: “To be honest, it seems quite personal now since you’re disregarding my courteous replies clarifying my comment. I didn’t mean to offend if I accidentally hit a sensitive spot. Everyone has the right to their opinions, including preferences for certain characters over others, and that was all I intended to say. Take care and best of luck to you!
Reports suggest that actors from Coronation Street may be prohibited from the Rovers Return, as the soap opera strives to reduce expenses.
High television production expenses and a decline in advertising income are reportedly threatening the continuation of the ITV soap.
In simpler terms, due to increased cost of making TV shows and less money coming from ads, the ITV soap may not continue.
It’s been reported that an insider suggests certain popular actors might have their scenes at The Rovers Return reduced to help with budget constraints.
After Charlotte Jordan declared her departure from the series, which coincides with past exits by Sue Cleaver, Colson Smith, and Helen Worth.
According to a source, Charlotte’s departure is merely the start of bigger changes. Coronation Street is struggling financially, and the management finds themselves in a position where they have to make tough choices.
Television production expenses have skyrocketed by over 50%, yet the advertising market that usually funds these productions has almost completely vanished. As a result, the actors aren’t content, but ITV is left with no other option than to reduce costs.
The salaries on the television series Coronation Street show a wide range, with longtime cast members such as Bill Roache reportedly earning approximately £2,000 per episode, whereas newer actors typically receive around £400 for each of their appearances.
It appears that the actors of the soap are said to have become angry once more, because in the past, the Rovers Return has often hosted various celebrities who receive payment for their brief appearances, regardless of how little they actually speak on-screen.
The source commented: ‘It was necessary for the bar staff to appear in every episode of Rovers, making it a lucrative role for them. However, those profitable times have passed – now, it’s simply too costly.’
Reportedly, some well-known actors from the series have expressed concerns about meeting their mortgage payments due to the budget reductions.
In an effort to generate income, both Corrie and the ITV soap Emmerdale frequently conduct guided tours, while Weatherfield recently established its own EE store as part of a ‘product placement’ arrangement.
Contrarily, Corrie’s competitor on BBC, EastEnders, remains financially sound due to the license fee and international agreements.
While Coronation Street faces financial struggles, its rival show EastEnders stays financially strong because of the license fee and foreign contracts.
Lastly: Compared to Corrie, EastEnders is in good financial standing thanks to the license fee and deals overseas.
However, some reports suggest that doubts have arisen about whether Corrie, celebrating its 65th anniversary this year, may continue in its present form until reaching the age of 70.
TopMob has contacted representatives for Coronation Street for comment.
