The 2019 horror film Ready or Not was critically acclaimed and a standout in the genre. Because of its success, the filmmakers have created a follow-up, titled .
I was so thrilled to hear about the premiere of Ready or Not 2: Here I Come! It actually first screened at the South by Southwest Festival on March 13th, ahead of its wider release in theaters on March 20th. And the buzz has been incredible – early reviews are fantastic! I checked Rotten Tomatoes, and it’s currently sitting at an impressive 89% approval rating. I can’t wait to see it!
Currently, the rating is based on just 19 reviews and is expected to change after the movie opens widely next weekend. Still, the initial reaction is positive, mirroring the original film’s impressive 89% Certified Fresh score.
Ready or Not 2: Here I Come Is the Sequel the 2019 Film Deserves
I’m so excited for Ready or Not 2: Here I Come! It’s awesome that the directors, Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett (Radio Silence), are back, and even better that Samara Weaving is returning as Grace! The movie continues right after the first one left off, and from what I’ve heard, it’s going to be even more intense and violent than before.
In this installment, Grace is up against the world’s most powerful and wealthy families, and she’s unexpectedly joined by her sister, Faith, portrayed by Kathryn Newton. The cast also includes Shawn Hatosy, David Cronenberg, Elijah Wood, and Kevin Durand.
In a review for Bleeding Cool, Kaitlyn Booth praised Ready or Not 2: Here I Come, noting that while it doesn’t break new ground like the first movie, it delivers the same exciting energy with plenty of memorable characters and inventive kills, making it a worthwhile sequel.
In a review for Deadline, Glenn Garner praised the new sequel as a thrilling and violent continuation that delivers on the expectations of fans after a seven-year wait. He expressed hope that it will lead to a third film, expanding the dark universe crafted by the creators, Radio Silence.
Despite some criticism, Gregory Nussen of ScreenRant complimented the actors’ performances, but strongly disliked the movie’s script, calling it pointless and lacking original thought or contribution to the existing story.
In a review for Screen International, Robert Daniels described Ready or Not 2: Here I Come as more violent than the first film, offering quick thrills but lacking emotional depth. He felt the movie relied too much on explaining things and didn’t allow enough time to connect with the characters.
Ready or Not Is a Streaming Hit
The original 2019 film is experiencing a surge in popularity as the sequel approaches, currently outperforming Predator: Badlands. This renewed interest among dedicated fans suggests the sequel has a strong chance of being a big hit, as they revisit the first movie to get ready for the next installment.
The first movie, released in 2019, was made for just $6 million but grossed $57.6 million globally. Given how well the first film did, it’s not surprising a sequel is in the works. Currently, we don’t know how much the sequel will cost to make or how much money it needs to earn to be successful.
Ready or Not 2: Here I Come hits theaters on Mar. 20.
