Samara Weaving's most underrated horror movie is now available to stream on Shudder

As a seasoned gamer and horror movie enthusiast who’s been through countless nights of sleepless terror thanks to my love for the genre, I can confidently say that Samara Weaving’s latest offering, “Azrael,” is a hidden gem that every fan of horror must add to their watch list. Having watched her terrifying performances in “Ready or Not” and “The Babysitter,” I was eagerly awaiting this action-horror flick, and boy, did it deliver!

As a fellow admirer of Samara Weaving’s remarkable performances in spine-tingling horrors like “Ready or Not” and “The Babysitter”, I’m excited to share some fantastic news! Her lesser-known yet terrific horror gem has found its way onto Shudder. This stealthy masterpiece slipped past many when it graced select theaters in September, but now it’s time for every horror enthusiast to experience it. It’s the adrenaline-pumping horror-action flick “Azrael”, and trust me; you won’t see the knockout punch coming!

Katz, renowned for his work on horror series like Channel Zero, The Haunting of Bly Manor, and Teacup, directed this chilling horror movie. Simon Barrett, known for films such as V/H/S, V/H/S/2, and You’re Next, penned the script. It made its debut at the 2024 South by Southwest festival in March, followed by IFC Films and Shudder purchasing North American distribution rights in July. The movie was scheduled for a limited theatrical release in September. However, the date for Shudder’s streaming release wasn’t announced until later.

The narrative unfolds in a post-apocalyptic era, focusing on Azrael, a resilient young woman, who finds herself hunted by an enigmatic, silent cult following her daring escape from their grasp. After being re-captured by the ruthless leaders of this cult, she is marked for sacrifice to placate an ominous entity lurking in the nearby wilderness. However, Azrael’s spirit remains unbroken, and she vows to battle tirelessly for her liberty and life, regardless of the sacrifices required.

Starring prominently as Azrael, she has previously appeared in chilling productions like “Ready or Not” and “The Babysitter.” However, it was her captivating portrayal of Grace in “Ready or Not” that truly cemented her status as a horror queen. Additionally, she showcased her versatility by playing Heather in the initial season of the humorous-horror television series “Ash vs Evil Dead.

Besides her role in “Mayhem”, a blend of action and horror, she also appeared in “The Babysitter: Killer Queen”, a mix of comedy and horror, as well as “Scream VI”, a classic slasher movie. Excitingly, she will reappear in the upcoming sequel “Ready or Not 2”. Furthermore, Vic Carmen Sonne, Nathan Stewart-Jarrett, and Katariina Unt have been added to the cast of the series “Azrael” alongside Weaving.

Take a look at the intense official trailer below, filled with thrilling action sequences and moments that will keep you on the edge of your seat!
