As a seasoned gamer with a penchant for survival horror games and a deep appreciation for Samara Weaving‘s acting prowess, I can hardly contain my excitement for the upcoming film, Azrael. The trailer alone has me on the edge of my seat, ready to dive headfirst into the heart-pounding chase through the woods.
In a different setting, Samara Weaving’s character, Azrael, finds herself bloodied and pursued once more, but unlike the events portrayed in “Ready or Not”, this time the story unfolds deep within a forest where Azrael flees from confinement.
In the upcoming movie titled “Azrael“, starring Weaving, her character is forced into a life-or-death struggle when she’s targeted by a silent cult seeking retribution for her escape. Judging from the trailer, she’ll need all her strength and wit to stay alive, as not only does the cult appear to have an unrelenting pursuit, but also a fierce creature seems to be helping them hunt her down. A chilling moment in the trailer suggests that Azrael may even be buried alive at some point.
Azrael is a movie directed by E.L. Katz, famously known for his films Cheap Thrills and Small Crimes, written by Simon Barrett – the same person who penned the 2021 film Seance and contributed to the script for Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire.

In the movie Azrael, Weaving takes center stage, but she’s not alone. She’s joined by an impressive cast featuring Vic Carmen Sonne (from Explosions in My Heart), Katariina Unt (known for Undergods), and Nathan Stewart-Jarrett (recognized from Misfits)). The film premiered at South by Southwest this past March, and it will begin playing in theaters starting in September.
Read the full synopsis:
In a world in which no one speaks, a mysterious, devout community hunts down a young woman named Azrael (Samara Weaving) who has escaped their imprisonment. Recaptured by its ruthless leaders, she is to be sacrificed to pacify an evil which resides deep within the surrounding wilderness – but Azrael will stop at nothing to ensure her own freedom and survival. From the seeds of this gritty, relentless parable of sacrifice and salvation, comes an immersive, real-time, action horror tale from the visionary minds of Simon Barrett and E.L. Katz.
Among the multiple ventures she has planned, Azrael is merely one of them. She is also set to appear in the comedy-thriller “Borderline” alongside Eric Dane, and the heist thriller “Eenie Meanie”. Additionally, it’s reported that she will share the screen with Kyle Gallner in Adam Rehmeier’s film “Caroline Caroline”, which is said to offer a fresh perspective on the classic tale of “Bonnie & Clyde”.
Beginning September 27, the movie titled Azrael is set to premiere in theaters. At a later point, it will also become available on Shudder.
