On Tuesday, Dr. Samantha Morton received the honor of becoming an Officer of the Order of the British Empire at a ceremony held at Windsor Castle.
I was so thrilled to see the actress, who’s 48 and looked absolutely elegant in a blue suit, receive such a wonderful honour! The Prince of Wales personally presented it to her, and it was a beautiful recognition of everything she’s done – not just her amazing work in drama, but also all her dedication to charity. It felt so well-deserved!
Samantha is well-known for her performances in Longford and The Serpent Queen. She began her television career in 1991 with roles in Soldier Soldier and Boon, and later became recognized for her work in historical dramas such as Emma (1996) and Jane Eyre (1997).
She became internationally recognized for her role in Carine Adler’s independent film, Under The Skin. This performance earned her a nomination for Best Actress at the British Independent Film Awards (Bifa) in 1998 – her first ever.

In 2002, she received the Best Actress Award for her role in the psychological drama Morvern Callar, and in 2022 she was honored with the Richard Harris Award for her significant contributions to British film as an actor.
The actress and director received two Oscar nominations: one in 2000 for her role as Hattie in Sweet And Lowdown, and another four years later for In America.
In 2008, she won a Golden Globe award for her performance as Myra Hindley, a child murderer, in the TV movie Longford.
As someone who’s spent years observing and understanding people’s lives, I’ve always been drawn to stories that truly resonate. That’s why I was so proud to direct and co-write The Unloved, a TV drama deeply rooted in my own experiences with the British care system. It was incredibly rewarding to see that work recognized, and we actually won a Best Single Drama award at the Bafta TV Awards back in 2010. It’s a project I remain very passionate about.
She appeared with Tom Cruise in the 2002 science fiction action movie Minority Report and portrayed Mary Lou in Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them (2016).
Last year, the celebrated actor was honored with the BAFTA fellowship – the academy’s most prestigious award – and used the opportunity to dedicate it to children in foster care.
