Sam Worthington takes a very pointed swipe at his homeland after slamming Aussie reporter for using wife Lara’s maiden name
As an expat Aussie living in New York for over two decades now, I can certainly relate to Sam Worthington’s sentiments. America has indeed given me a sense of community and anonymity that I cherish, just like Sam. The city never fails to surprise me with its vibrant energy and the fact that my acting career isn’t always the first topic of conversation is quite refreshing!
Expat Aussie actor Sam Worthington has taken a not-so-subtle swipe at his homeland.
Currently, Sam and his spouse Lara Bingle divide their days between Sydney and New York. However, the actor from Avatar shared that he doesn’t foresee moving to Australia permanently in the near future.
Speaking to GQ Australia, Sam said that he owed ‘everything’ to his adopted homeland.
‘No. I like America,’ Sam said when asked if a move was in the couple’s future.
For nearly two decades, America has provided me with countless opportunities and resources. Despite the anonymity, there’s a strong feeling of camaraderie here that I find quite remarkable and appealing.
Sam mentioned that he too found himself charmed by New York – a location where his acting career isn’t necessarily the main focus of discussions.
He mentioned, “I have friends in that place, yet we never discuss my job. In essence, nobody in New York City seems to care about what I do for a living; however, I adore it.
In the interview, Sam additionally disclosed his plans to work on upcoming ventures in the southern hemisphere starting from the New Year.
Sam shared, “Instead of filming another movie next year as originally planned, it has been moved back. Additionally, I have some work opportunities in Australia.
In my youth, your movie choices often depended on the filming location. You’d say something like, “That’s a new place for me, I want to explore it.” It’s pleasant to see you enjoying some things back home in Australia now.
After an uncomfortable encounter with a journalist at the GQ Men Of the Year Awards red carpet event earlier this month, Sam made his remarks subsequently.
Channel Seven reporter Sally Bowery sparked disapproval among viewers of the Sydney event when she referred to Sam’s wife, Lara Bingle, using her maiden name instead of her married name.
‘Her name is Lara Worthington,’ the 48-year-old Avatar star clapped back.
‘It’s only been ten years,’ a clearly irritated Sam quickly added.
Bowery quickly apologised for he faux pas.
‘That was my slip,’ she said.
Later on in the evening, the Avatar star was crowned GQ’s Man of the Year.
Following the red carpet Bingle bungle, Sally clapped back at the actor in a column for Seven.
Sally explained, “I mentioned Lara’s previous name, not an incorrect one. It’s a name she’d used extensively throughout her life. In fact, it was quite well-known within the household, even before she got married.
She asserted that Lara appeared completely unfazed by her mistake and chuckled it away, expressing her bewilderment over why Sam preferred to address her using her married surname instead of her usual one.
Sally asserted: ‘Then, why wasn’t her husband present at the gathering honoring contemporary masculinity? A woman’s identity in marriage transcends merely adopting her spouse’s last name.’
Subsequently, she referred back to Sam’s acceptance speech from when he was named Man of The Year, where he emphasized the importance of overcoming old-fashioned ideas.
I stand before you all, and I wish to share a profound thought: Men, we have the capacity to love others selflessly and respectfully, unfettered by antiquated norms or stereotypes that no longer serve us. We can transcend these outdated standards, those sad, archaic ideals of masculinity, and embrace a more enlightened vision of what it means to be a man.
‘I couldn’t agree more,’ she concluded.
Sam and Lara started going out together back in 2013, and they quietly tied the knot in 2014. Since then, they’ve been blessed with three boys – Racer, who is now eight years old, River at four, and Rocket, their nine-year-old son.
