Sam Witwer Teases Darth Maul’s Hidden Feelings and Backstory in New Star Wars Series

In the upcoming animated series, “Maul: Shadow Lord” set to debut in 2025, we’ll finally uncover Darth Maul’s hidden intentions. This show was announced during Star Wars Celebration 2025, where Dave Filoni shared details about future shows and films that will delve deeper into the rich Star Wars universe. In this series, Maul (played by Sam Witwer) is the leader of a criminal gang, working against the Empire in the years following Order 66’s tragedy. Concurrently, he takes on the role of training a new apprentice in the ways of the Dark Side.

At the Star Wars Celebration, Ash Crossan from ScreenRant had a chat with Witwer, where they talked about what makes this show unique in terms of Maul’s character. Unlike previous appearances where he was either a side character or secondary villain, the upcoming series will delve into the profound impact that the rise of the Empire had on Maul’s life. With the Jedi being non-existent and magic seemingly vanished from the galaxy, Maul must adapt to this new reality, leaving behind his days among the Jedi Knights and the vibrant, magical universe he once knew. Here is a snippet of what Witwer had to say:

(Quote goes here)

What is Maul’s sentiment towards the Jedi and his overall perspective on his life given that he was a classically trained force user from an era of knights, dragons, and magic, now witnessing an empire draining the magic and vibrancy out of the galaxy? This is where our story begins.

What This Means For Maul’s Character

Maul May Begin To Reconsider His Legacy

It appears that many of the questions concerning Maul’s viewpoint on the Jedi have already been addressed, as he has made several appearances in Star Wars: Rebels. As a dedicated follower of the Dark Side of the Force, Maul was driven by his need for vengeance, hatred, and the fiery passion that the Dark Side promotes. Following the demise of the Jedi, the absence of his sworn enemy left him with fewer opportunities to nurture that deep-seated hatred. In Star Wars: Rebels, he pursued Obi-Wan Kenobi as a target, but in his final moments, he expressed a desire for vengeance against Palpatine instead.

In the new series, we might delve deeper into Maul’s transformation, as his intention to eliminate Palpatine and other Sith Lords, instead of the Jedi, signifies a change in his motivations. This shift wasn’t thoroughly examined during his time on Rebels. While it is known that he harbored resentment towards Palpatine for leaving him to take another apprentice, the story didn’t explore his long-term feelings about the Jedi’s destruction. The upcoming series could provide a comprehensive portrayal of Maul’s personality, driving forces, and aspirations, thereby enriching his character. Moreover, his apprentice is expected to reveal previously unseen aspects of his character, though he did make an attempt to train Ezra Bridger in Rebels.

Our Take On Maul: Shadow Lord’s Premise

Many Questions Have Already Been Answered

Maul, a character whose backstory hasn’t been thoroughly delved into yet, has left many questions hinted at, though not fully resolved. Maul was present during the fall of the Jedi and has consistently opposed Palpatine, while also seeking revenge on his former master. It seems he channels his anger towards the Sith to sustain himself, which might have kept him alive and empowered by the Dark Side. The title “Maul: Shadow Lord” suggests an intriguing narrative, but the answers to these questions aren’t particularly complex. Given Maul’s popularity, the story should remain engaging even without demanding too much from its audience.
