Sam Witwer may have played James Kirk but it wasn’t his first romp with Star Trek

As a lifelong sci-fi enthusiast, I can confidently say that Sam Witwer is a name that resonates deeply within our shared universe of interstellar adventure. His journey through the cosmos mirrors my own, albeit with more screen time and arguably better hair. From his humble beginnings as a nameless Sloth on Star Trek: Enterprise to embodying Shatner’s Kirk in Unification, Witwer has proven himself to be an indispensable intergalactic traveler.

Science fiction enthusiasts would probably recognize the name Sam Witwer. For the past 25 years, if something has had a sci-fi flavor to it, he’s probably contributed to it in some capacity. Before securing his first recurring role on SyFy’s Battlestar Galactica remake, he was seen on shows like Dark Angel and Angel. On Battlestar Galactica, he played Crashdown, one of the more compelling characters on the series.

In a twist of fate, I found myself transformed into Doomsday on Smallville, later metamorphosing into the tank walker devouring Rick Grimes in The Walking Dead’s pilot episode. But after 2008, my journey truly took flight.

In simpler terms, he began acting in different Star Wars productions, primarily portraying Starkiller in the two Force Unleashed video games. Later on, he provided voiceovers for Darth Maul across various franchise projects and also served as a model for the main character in Days Gone.

Throughout his career, he eventually landed a role in the SyFy reboot of the British show “Being Human,” followed by an appearance on “Supergirl” as Agent Liberty.

More recently, Witwer portrayed William Shatner’s character James Kirk in a Star Trek short film titled Unification. Using prosthetics and computer-generated imagery, it was Witwer who embodied Shatner’s Kirk for one final adventure. The short has garnered positive feedback, even though there is minimal audible dialogue.

Although he’s currently well-known for his work in science fiction, it’s not his first time venturing through the cosmos – fun fact: before voicing Darth Maul and appearing in numerous sci-fi series, Witwer once played an unnamed Sloth character on Star Trek: Enterprise.

In the third season’s seventh episode titled “Shipment,” Witwer portrayed a character from the Xindi race, who are similar to sloths. Later, he continued his association with Star Trek by embodying Captain Kirk’s legacy in a brief stint. Subsequently, Witwer made appearances in two different roles within an episode of Lower Decks. In A Farewell to Arms, he took on the characters Malor and Sir Legnog.
