Sam Thompson says his autism diagnosis will add ‘an extra layer of difficulty’ to gruelling Soccer Aid challenge as he reflects on ’emotional’ reaction to his post about the condition

Sam Thompson shares that his recent autism diagnosis brings an additional complexity to the challenges he faces during the upcoming Soccer Aid event.

Before starting his challenge on Monday, Sam confided in TopMob that the appreciation he’s gotten from fans has stirred up some strong emotions within him.

He expressed: “This week, I’ve been inundated with messages about my autism, and it’s genuinely moved me. It’s particularly poignant as my Match Ball Mission for Soccer Aid begins next Monday. Going through all the DMs and heartwarming comments has left me overwhelmed.

At the age of thirty, I was identified as having Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder. Shortly afterward, I was also diagnosed with Autism. I’ve always felt honored by these diagnoses, and I frequently share my perspective that having these conditions is like possessing a unique superpower.

Regarding his diagnosis, Sam expressed that it brought a sense of ‘relief’ for him back then, and over time, he feels he has grown accustomed to ‘managing life’ with his health conditions.

He went on to say: ‘Receiving the diagnoses was actually comforting, in a way. I’m currently 32 years old, which has given me plenty of time over the past years to adapt to life post-diagnosis.’

Absolutely, challenges abound, yet I strive to find the silver lining in every situation, embracing the individuality that these experiences shape within me.

Sam is preparing for a challenging four-day journey that involves both running and biking, covering approximately 260 miles from London to Manchester. His goal is to deliver the Soccer Aid matchday ball before the actual game on June 15th.

The celebrity from I’m A Celebrity acknowledged that he would need to draw upon significant mental strength to finish the task, given his autism often triggers heightened anxiety.

Sam went on saying, “I’ve just declared my endeavor for a remarkable undertaking aimed at collecting funds for UNICEF’s global initiatives in aid of children. This journey will push me to my mental and physical limits.

Dealing with both ADHD and autism makes my preparations for the Match Ball Mission, a 260-mile journey involving running and cycling from Stamford Bridge to Old Trafford, more challenging.

In addition to the demanding physical tasks of running marathons and cycling every day, I’ll have to tap into my mental reserves to reach the end successfully.

Living with autism can make social interactions more challenging for me, as they often provoke anxiety. Normally, I cherish my solitude; however, this upcoming challenge may require less, if any, of that precious alone time.

In a more casual and simplified manner, ‘Since I have autism, I prefer a set routine, but when it comes to daily travel, every day on the road is unique, ensuring there’s always something new to keep me alert.’

With everything said, I’m completely committed to bringing the match ball to Old Trafford and collecting as many donations as possible.

Lately, I traveled to Guatemala to check out a UNICEF-backed initiative. Up close, I witnessed the transformative impact UNICEF has on the lives of these young ones.

I’m participating in this task for the kids I encountered, aiming to collect as much as I can, as I firmly believe it will have a significant impact.

Sam has additionally posted a private video journal detailing his journey to Guatemala, which afforded him a glimpse into a UNICEF-backed initiative at work.

The upcoming struggle of the star is scheduled to appear in a documentary on ITV, airing on June 13.

This past week, Sam posted on Instagram about his approach to dealing with his autism diagnosis.

It’s important for me to share that this cause holds a special place in my heart. The charity’s motto, ‘redefining what it means to have ADHD in the UK positively,’ reflects my personal mission since I was recently diagnosed with ADHD myself.

The five goals of this charity are Information, Support, Research, Advocacy, and Awareness. I aim to leverage my own platform and audience to contribute to each of these areas.

One significant aspect of my life is advocating for a shift in perspectives towards individuals with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), fostering open dialogue about this subject. I aspire that this endeavor will remain the core and most enduring part of my personal legacy.

Ever since I departed from the jungle, I’ve encountered numerous kids and grown-ups expressing gratitude for altering their perspectives about ADHD, as they reached out to me following our encounters.

My goal is to share my message with a wide audience, particularly focusing on the younger generation. I aim to demonstrate that having neurodiversity brings a unique, enchanting quality to one’s life.
