Sam Thompson reveals he is having vocal cord surgery to remove a cyst caused by ‘shouting too much’ – as he shares clips in his hospital gown

Sam Thompson is getting surgery on his vocal cords to remove a cyst, which he believes developed from straining his voice by shouting frequently.

The 33-year-old former star of Made In Chelsea posted videos to his Instagram Story on Tuesday while in a hospital gown, before undergoing a medical procedure.

He shared in a video that he’s getting surgery on his vocal cords to remove a cyst. He explained it’s something he’s known about for a while now.

‘It’s because I talk to much and shout too loudly and I keep losing my voice really easily.

They’re going to remove it surgically, and I’ll be under anesthesia for the first time. I’m pretty anxious about it, as I don’t like the feeling of being out of control.

It was a funny moment – he actually said his sister Louise was giving him a ride home after the operation, and he’s 33! It just showed his personality, even while recovering.

Louise explained that her son wouldn’t be able to speak for three days following his procedure, and she worried about this because he’s usually so lively and chatty.

Sam is having surgery soon. This comes after he told his girlfriend, Talitha Balinska, about his Valentine’s Day plans, which unfortunately had to change because a planned ski trip fell through.

He started dating the model in September after his split from Zara McDermott in 2024.

Last month, Sam deepened their relationship by finally telling Talitha he loved her.

On Monday’s episode of his podcast, Staying Relevant, Sam shared with his close friend Pete Wicks that he was feeling anxious about his first Valentine’s Day with Talitha, and talked about what he had planned.

Sam described his simple plan for the day: he wants to personally give her a card and roses, then cook dinner for her at home with wine.

He had planned a Valentine’s Day surprise for Talitha after a romantic ski trip he’d mentioned on his podcast couldn’t happen because of work.

To be honest, I’m not a big fan of gifts for Valentine’s Day,” Sam explained. “I think it shouldn’t be focused on presents. I’d prefer roses – not too many, because that feels over the top – but a thoughtful bunch would be perfect.

‘Red roses, or maybe a bit of mixed actually white and a red, two dozen.’

As a long-time admirer of floral symbolism, I always appreciated Pete’s insight. He rightly pointed out that white roses actually represent ‘purity and innocence,’ which is a lovely sentiment, but a bit different from the ‘passion’ most people associate with Valentine’s Day. It’s a subtle but important distinction!

Sam, still following through with his plans, admitted he needed help with dinner. He confessed he wasn’t very confident when it came to cooking, saying he knew the other person had more experience and a natural knack for it.

I’m picturing a romantic evening with you, Pete – roses, a nice dinner at my place. I’m planning on cooking something a little different, maybe even a fondue. I want to try something a bit creative!

‘I’m not good at this but I’m really going to try. Do I dress up? Do I put something on?’

He explained that if they weren’t living together, he’d personally deliver a card with roses and give her a kiss.

The card will be short but heartfelt, and I’m hoping to write it by hand. Please deliver it with the roses, give her a kiss, and tell her I’ll see her tonight.

I’m planning a relaxed evening with some music and a couple glasses of wine – probably a Rioja, since that’s the only kind I’m familiar with. I’ll be cooking dinner, and we’ll just enjoy each other’s company in the kitchen. I’m not trying to make it anything too fancy.

Sam also admitted he was worried about the celebration, explaining, “It’s just a nerve-wracking time. As a boyfriend, you can’t help but worry about messing things up.”

‘I don’t want to f*** it up, especially first Valentine’s Day.’

Sam had previously told Pete he was planning a surprise ski trip for Talitha, but he confessed that the trip never actually happened.

When asked how it went, Sam admitted it hadn’t happened at all. He explained that he simply wasn’t able to make it work, as agents and his job quickly put an end to the idea.

‘Luckily I didn’t tell her. It was a pipe dream that started and ended in this studio.’

Last month, Sam confessed to Pete that he told Talitha he loves her while they were relaxing on the sofa. He admitted he’d felt this way for a while but found it difficult to actually say it out loud.

The presenter had a tough beginning to 2025 after his breakup with Zara. However, things turned around thanks to a new relationship, a completely sold-out concert at London’s O2 Arena, and a major success with his charity work, leading to a very positive end to the year.
