After years of speculation, Sam Raimi is finally clarifying who he considered for villain roles in the planned Spider-Man 4 movie.
Sam Raimi directed three Spider-Man movies with Tobey Maguire, but when plans for a fourth film fell through due to disagreements and setbacks, he left the project. Before Sony announced a reboot with Andrew Garfield in The Amazing Spider-Man, rumors circulated that Rachel McAdams was being considered to play the villain Black Cat in Spider-Man 4. She quickly dismissed those rumors when they appeared.
While promoting his new film Send Help, director Sam Raimi spoke with CinemaBlend about rumors that Alison McAdams might appear in Spider-Man 4. He clarified that she was never considered for the movie and, to his knowledge, they never held auditions for a female villain. Raimi confirmed he had previously discussed the role of the Vulture with John Malkovich. Here’s what Raimi said:
No, as far as I know, we never held auditions for a female villain. I did discuss the role of the Vulture with John Malkovich, and he was fantastic – we had a great connection. Unfortunately, that film project didn’t move forward.
This explanation follows director Sam Raimi’s recent comments to ScreenRant about Spider-Man 4. He stated he doesn’t feel it would be a good fit for him to revisit that story, explaining that he’s passed the creative reins to someone else. He believes the current filmmakers should continue the story and connect with the existing fanbase.
Although Sam Raimi has finished directing Spider-Man films, he did direct a Marvel movie in 2022: Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. He took over the project after Scott Derrickson left. Rachel McAdams appeared in this sequel, as well as the first Doctor Strange film, playing Dr. Christine Palmer. She also provided the voice for the character in an episode of the animated series What If…?
Despite Sam Raimi’s absence from directing, many fans still believe Tobey Maguire might return as Spider-Man. He, along with Andrew Garfield, appeared in 2021’s Spider-Man: No Way Home. Rumors suggest either or both actors could be included in upcoming Avengers films, Doomsday or Secret Wars. These movies will explore the multiverse and feature the return of the X-Men from their early 2000s films.
Although a fourth Spider-Man movie starring Tobey Maguire or Andrew Garfield never materialized, a new film featuring Tom Holland as Spider-Man is coming to theaters on July 31, 2026. The movie, titled Spider-Man: Brand New Day, will also star Jon Bernthal as the Punisher, Mark Ruffalo as the Hulk, and Sadie Sink in a currently unknown role. Destin Daniel Cretton, who directed Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, is directing the film.
