Horror director Sam Raimi is returning to filmmaking after a several-year break. His new thriller, starring Rachel McAdams and Dylan O’Brien, is set to hit theaters next January. While the movie isn’t a supernatural horror film like many of his past projects, Raimi has hinted that it will still be a wildly entertaining story with his trademark style.
Okay, so I just read an interview with Sam Raimi – the guy who brought us Darkman and a whole lot of other fun stuff – and he’s promising his next film is going to be really something. Even for him, apparently! Raimi’s always been known for throwing in these wonderfully weird, over-the-top moments, and he says this new survival thriller will be packed with them. I’ve seen the trailer, and trust me, it looks like a bumpy ride.
As a huge cinema fan, I was immediately hooked by the core of this story – it’s all about flipping the script on who holds the power. Honestly, when Damian Shannon and Mark Swift first pitched it, I just burst out laughing – I couldn’t believe they were going there! And that’s saying something, considering I’m known for making pretty wild horror movies.
Sam Raimi is well-known as a horror director, creating classics like the Evil Dead films and Drag Me to Hell. He’s also proven he can handle other genres, directing successful superhero movies like the original Spider-Man films, the thriller A Simple Plan, and the fantasy adventure Oz the Great and Powerful. He’s a remarkably diverse filmmaker. Now, with Send Help, he seems to be returning to the suspenseful, frightening stories that first made him famous.
What Is Sam Raimi’s ‘Send Help’ About?
The new film, Send Help, is scheduled to be released by 20th Century Studios on January 30, 2026. This release date is considered risky, as early January isn’t usually a popular time for moviegoing. Director Sam Raimi is returning after a four-year break, though his last film was the Marvel sequel Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness in 2022. Taylor Swift and Shannon are back with a horror project, having previously written scripts for Freddy Vs. Jason and the 2009 Friday the 13th remake. They also wrote the 2017 Baywatch movie, which most people would prefer not to remember.
The movie stars McAdams and O’Brien as Linda and Bradley, an office worker and her boss. After a plane crash leaves them stranded on an island, they have to put aside their differences and work together to survive. The supporting cast includes Dennis Haysbert, Xavier Samuel, Emma Raimi, and Edyll Ismail.
Although very different from his earlier work, like the Evil Dead films, Sam Raimi sees a common thread in the storylines. He explained to Empire that the new film, unlike his previous ones, focuses on internal struggles rather than external threats. He says the characters are grappling with their true selves, and as they confront this, conflicts begin to surface.
