Sam Heughan explains why Jamie reunited with [SPOILER] in newest Outlander episode

As a movie critic with a penchant for historical dramas and a soft spot for complex characters, I must admit that the return of Outlander to our screens has left me both exhilarated and wistful. The series, now in its seventh season, continues to weave an intricate tapestry of love, loyalty, and longing, with Jamie Fraser (Sam Heughan) and Claire Fraser’s (Caitriona Balfe) journey taking us back to the heart of Scotland.

The popular series “Outlander” is back for the second half of its seventh season. In this part, we find ourselves in Scotland once again as characters Jamie Fraser (Sam Heughan) and Claire Fraser (Caitriona Balfe) reunite. Many familiar faces from Jamie’s past make an appearance, including his former wife, Laoghaire (Nell Hudson).

Over time, Jamie and Laoghaire have had a strained relationship filled with difficult highs and lows. Nevertheless, Jamie feels compelled to contact her and make amends. As Heughan explained to Radio Times, “He’s an honorable man who feels a sense of obligation.” Additionally, he believes that despite their tumultuous past, there remains in Jamie a memory of the young Jamie and Laoghaire they once were.

He knows deep down that she’s hurting. He wants to help her, he wants to make sure that she’s OK, but also Joni – he’s got a very soft place in his heart for her. Obviously, they lived together for some time. So he has a sense of duty and he’s a good man, and I think he’s putting a lot of things to rest.

Jamie tends to choose the path of integrity, which explains why he would strive to repair relationships, if we can momentarily blend metaphors. “He’s settled in America, yet there are aspects he wishes to distance himself from,” Heughan added. “It’s delightful to witness Nell [Hudson] return. She’s a character that I believe fans love to loathe. And as soon as she appears on screen, you can almost hear the audience catch their breath.

There’s also a point to consider that after the second part of Season 7 ends, there will only be one more season of Outlander left. This suggests that the writers might be bringing characters like Laoghaire into play now because they will be occupied with concluding the journeys of our main cast in Season 8 and may not have as much time to focus on secondary characters.

In a suggestive manner, Heughan appeared to allude to the subject as he pondered the emotional task of parting ways with characters that viewers have grown fond of over the years. “Absolutely, it’s an enjoyable phase to re-experience and to work alongside these remarkable characters once more,” he commented. However, as you noted, it’s also a bittersweet experience to bid farewell to some cherished characters and locations.

Currently, Claire is headed back to the American colonies, a place where her medical abilities are desperately sought. Meanwhile, Jamie continues to stay in Scotland. An intriguing voyage lies ahead as Jamie becomes more involved with his son William Ransom (portrayed by Charles Vandervaart), who remains unaware of their familial bond. The plot unfolds naturally, driven by the captivating twists that Outlander is known for, building up to a climactic finale in season 8.

Every Friday, new episodes for season 7 are released on Starz. However, it’s not expected until 2026 that we’ll see season 8. During this gap, Starz plans to debut “Blood of My Blood,” a spinoff from Outlander focusing on Jamie and Claire’s parents.
