Sam Heughan and Caitroina Balfe open to returning for Outlander movie to finish the series
As a die-hard Outlander fan, I have been following this incredible series since its inception and it has become an integral part of my life. The recent revelations about the possibility of an Outlander movie have sent a wave of excitement through the fandom. The idea that Jamie and Claire’s story might continue beyond the final season is a beacon of hope for those of us who don’t want to say goodbye just yet.
Last Friday marked the resumption of the seventh season’s second half for the popular series “Outlander” on Starz. The story finds Jamie and Claire Fraser (played by Sam Heughan and Caitriona Balfe) in Scotland, but it appears their stay won’t be prolonged.
Following the conclusion of this current half-season, it seems like only one more season of Outlander remains before the series ends for good…or might there be more? During an appearance on The One Show, Heughan and Balfe were questioned about a potential Outlander movie in the future. “Well, never say never, right?” Balfe replied. “If there was interest, we would always want to…
Samuel also added his thoughts: “If it’s what the fans desire, how can we refuse them? However, we’ll have to wait and see.
Part of the reason there may be a demand for an Outlander movie is because the show, will not adapt the whole of Diana Gaboldon’s Outlander novels. Roughly speaking, the show has adapted the books at about a rate of one book per season. There will be eight seasons of the show by the time it’s done, and Gabaldon is still working on the tenth and final Outlander book. You do the math.
Sam Heughan describes Jamie and Claire’s final scene together on Outlander
We’ll find out if there’s still interest in watching more “Outlander” once its eighth and concluding season finishes airing. For the moment, fans are savoring the second part of the seventh season, which is being released every Friday on Starz. However, it’s difficult not to ponder the approaching end, especially since Heughan and Balfe have been giving hints about it.
During their conversation on The One Show, the duo hinted that the upcoming discussion would be deeply emotional. Heughan further elaborated, sharing specifics such as a lengthy seven-and-a-half minute scene filled with dialogue. As is common in Outlander, this extended scene was expected to be quite dramatic. Additionally, there were numerous goodbyes within the scene, but their significance was twofold since they represented farewells not just for the characters, but also for the actors themselves.
It seems clear that bidding farewell could be an emotional ordeal for devoted fans, making a film perhaps a comforting thought. Moreover, next year on Starz, there will be a new prequel series titled “Blood of My Blood” based around Jamie and Claire’s parents. This indicates that Starz is not planning to leave their fans wanting more.
