Sam Heughan and Caitriona Balfe talk about the last-ever Outlander scene they filmed
As a seasoned movie critic with over three decades of film-watching under my belt, I must say that the return of Outlander for its seventh season has me more excited than a Scotsman at a bagpipe convention! The anticipation is palpable as Jamie and Claire find themselves back in Scotland, but not without some trepidation.
In no time, the seventh season of “Outlander” will resume, bringing us the second half. This time, Jamie Fraser (Sam Heughan) and Claire Fraser (Caitriona Balfe) are back in Scotland after a while. However, Jamie seems apprehensive about going back to his native land, as suggested by the pre-premiere clips that have been circulating.
Jamie will undoubtedly find great joy in going home, and so will fans, as they get to witness their beloved characters and favorite settings once more, according to Heughan. However, it’s been hinted in the trailers that Fraser and Claire will eventually part ways, with Claire returning to the American colonies. Heughan shared this information with AP News.
Balfe stated at New York Comic Con in October, as reported by The Direct, that “It seems nothing good comes from the Frasers being apart.” She further added, “This season might be the best illustration of this. Their relationship is pushed to its limits more than it has been for quite a while, perhaps even for several decades.
Claire learns a lot about herself… But I think they also learn that, you know, at this point, it’s never a what if, like, will they won’t they? You know, we know that they’re together and they love each other. But I think it’s more like, how are they going to get through this, rather than will they? And that’s the kind of interesting thing about its growing marriage.
It appears that there might be some surprising turns ahead, as suggested by Balfe to TV Insider: “It was actually one of the hardest episodes I’ve filmed recently. I’m still trying to grasp some of the things that Claire does from the book,” she said. “I believe I made it convincing.
In the meantime, Heughan referred to the upcoming split as “painful,” hinting at more intense developments between Jamie and his son William. At present, William remains unaware of Jamie being his father. When Jamie returns, he encounters a complex situation that’s challenging for him to comprehend, given the relationship dynamics between Claire, John Gray, and later on, William will learn the truth about his real father.
And it’s, of course, hugely dangerous for William, but also really hard for William to fathom, to put together. And Jamie’s always wanted to be a part of his son’s life, but could never be directly. So it’s gonna be a huge storyline that’s played out throughout Season 7 and perhaps into Season 8…It’s a catalyst for William. It sort of sends him on this spiral that has all these repercussions. So, it really is a catalyst for the explosiveness and drama of the next two seasons.
How many Outlander books will the show adopt in the end?
Following the conclusion of season 7’s second half, just one more season of “Outlander” remains, which might spark curiosity among fans of Diana Gabaldon’s “Outlander” book series. To date, Gabaldon has penned nine books in the series and plans to write one more to wrap it up. Will the show be capable of adapting all these remaining books?
Essentially, what Maril Davis is saying is that Season 7 covers the remaining portions of Book 6 since they ran out of space in Season 6. Books 7 and 8 are also covered in Seasons 7 and 8 respectively. However, she expressed a desire for more content from Book 10 in Season 8.
As a dedicated Outlander fan and movie critic, I eagerly await season 8, which will incorporate fragments from book 10. However, it’s important to note that the show may not fully follow Diana Gabaldon’s original vision for the series. In an interview, she expressed her desire to complete all the books, but the fate of certain characters in season 8 remains uncertain. I fervently hope to revisit this captivating world in book ten, and perhaps some elements will be incorporated into the upcoming spinoff, Outlander: Blood of My Blood.
Sam Heughan and Caitriona Balfe remember filming their final Outlander scene
They’ve already wrapped up the final season of Outlander; there might be a few additional scenes to shoot, but for all intents and purposes, it’s complete. Balfe recalled that last scene as particularly moving, as she herself was deeply affected by it.
As a fellow cinema enthusiast, I wholeheartedly agree with him. We wrapped up on a scene, or so I believe – it was rather challenging due to its profound Jamie-Claire essence, which made it quite fitting. I suspect they planned it that way. However, it was also quite intense as many of the crew gathered to witness and celebrate the final take of our last scene together.
For both of them, the memory remains vivid as if it just happened. As Balfe explained, there were numerous words, making it challenging to navigate through since it seemed like every phrase held a dual meaning, particularly concerning farewells and such.
Preparing for some emotional farewells in season 8 is inevitable as we bid adieu to Jamie and Claire. It seems like season 4’s second half might hold some heart-wrenching goodbyes too. As Sam Heughan put it, many places and characters will leave us in season 7B. After all, every story must eventually reach its conclusion.
New episodes of Outlander will start to drop on Starz on Friday, November 22.
