Sam Hazeldine and Robert Strange say The Rings of Power season 2 is "definitely darker" (Exclusive)

As a devoted fan of Middle-earth and its enchanting lore, I eagerly anticipate the second season of The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power. With August 29th fast approaching, I’m preparing to mark my calendar like Bilbo Baggins prepares for his unexpected adventures.

Nearly two years have passed since we last saw new installments of “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power”. Don’t fret, fellow fantasy enthusiasts! Season 2 of “The Rings of Power” is nearly upon us. Make sure to jot down August 29 in your calendar, as the initial three episodes will be available on Prime Video then.

As we eagerly anticipate, I’ve been privy to some thrilling conversations with the stars of the show! Winter is Coming had the chance to sit down with the cast in a lively roundtable discussion at San Diego Comic-Con, including fresh faces Robert Strange and Sam Hazeldine.

Glug the Orc

In a new role, Robert Strange portrays an Orc character named Glug, who serves as Adar’s right-hand figure. Strange revealed that the process of applying makeup, attaching prosthetics, and donning the costume takes approximately four to five hours. Undeniably, this role requires a significant investment of time!

Strange praised Lula, our exceptional movement director, and Leith, our dialect coach, for their invaluable assistance. With so many teeth, costumes, and prosthetics involved, they’ve been instrumental in getting the accent right and helping with physicality, he said. Over the two seasons, I’ve had the privilege of portraying various Orcs, and I strive to make each one unique. To maintain my fitness and health is crucial, as it feels like playing monsters, but now as an adult.

Glug [is] this new Orc character for season 2, he’s kind of one of Adar’s inner circle, right hand. But what’s fun to explore with Glug, which is something a little bit new, is this concept that Orcs kind of have layers and complexity to them. They’re not just warriors bent on evil. They have kind of their own lives going on. They even have families that we’re exploring. And then how does that then affect the fact that they are still kind of searching for a home or establishing their home and the fact that they’re being sorted left, right, and center, and that they’re being sent to war yet again. So it creates an interesting dynamic between Glug and the father of the orcs, Adar.

Meet the new Adar

In the current season, a newcomer named Hazeldine is stepping into the role previously played by Joseph Mawle as the character Adar in “The Rings of Power”. Since Mawle has moved on to other ventures, it’s up to Hazeldine to preserve the essence established by Mawle for the character, while also injecting his unique take on the corrupted elf and orc leader.

In a straightforward and conversational manner, Hazeldine expressed, “I genuinely enjoyed stepping into Joseph’s role. I admired his work in the first season, and he happened to be my favorite character. If you were inheriting decisions from someone whose choices you didn’t agree with, that could be challenging. But this was quite the opposite. It was a pleasant experience. Although we don’t resemble each other physically, it’s undeniably the same character. Essentially, I felt like picking up where he left off and continuing with the role. It was a positive transition.”

In interviews we’ve conducted (links provided at the end for your convenience), fellow cast members of “The Rings of Power” season 2 have expressed similar sentiments. Essentially, each character is responding to the looming presence of Sauron, despite their individual narratives that may not directly cross paths. However, they all share a common concern on this particular matter, uniting them in the storyline.

As a devoted fan, I can’t help but notice an intriguing parallel among certain characters hailing from diverse realms within this captivating series. It seems they all share a common goal: figuring out the best course of action since Sauron has made his chilling return. Time is not on our side; we need to act swiftly.

The Rings of Power season 2 is “definitely darker

As a devoted fan, I can’t help but feel the ominous presence of Sauron looming over the set. It’s clear that the second season will plunge us into even deeper shadows compared to the first one.

According to Hazeldine, it gets off to a swift start and packs a strong punch right away because we are already familiar with all the worlds and characters. Compared to the initial episodes in the first season, it moves at a much faster pace.

Strange hinted that many characters across various realms are becoming entangled in increasingly intricate interactions, relationships, and predicaments, and will face diverse trials as a result. Meanwhile, Hazeldine noted that the return of Sauron has triggered an urgent need for swift action.

The second season of “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power” will start airing on August 29. The initial three episodes are set to be released simultaneously on Amazon Prime Video.
