Sam Fender, Chappell Roen and Foo Fighters help generate a staggering £1.2billion for music tourism across north west England amid growing demand for live music

The significant contributions of artists like Sam Fender, Chappell Roen, and Foo Fighters have contributed to an astounding £1 billion increase in musical tourism throughout the northwest of England.

Over three million individuals flocked to music festivals and venues spread across Manchester, Liverpool, and nearby urban areas during the year 2024. This influx significantly boosted ticket sales, food, merchandise, travel expenses, camping fees, lodging costs, and parking revenue throughout the region.

Moreover, the report published on UK Music’s website indicates that approximately 9,250 full-time positions were generated directly due to the consumer interest in live entertainment.

It’s clear that a staggering 1.2 billion pounds were earned from live performances in the northwest during the year, as crowds of fans turned out to watch a variety of musicians such as Fender, Roan, and Foo Fighters.

31-year-old entertainer Fender from Geordieland, known for his recent release “People Watching,” his third studio album, captivated a full house at the Co-Op Live in Manchester back in December.

On May 24, he will put on a performance at Sefton Park in Liverpool, followed by another show at Wythenshawe Park in Manchester on August 16.

In the year 2024, American entertainer Roen (aged 27) delighted fans across Lancashire at Great Stage Park and Manchester Academy, during her Midwest Princess Tour. Simultaneously, Foo Fighters fronted by Dave Grohl captivated a crowd of 50,000 at Emirates Old Trafford.

In contrast to conventional settings, annual music festivals such as Parklife, Creamfields, and Beat-Herder have attracted a substantial number of enthusiasts towards the northern region.

In total, over 21.9 million British residents attended live performances by their favorite artists within the country in 2024, and an additional 1.6 million individuals from abroad joined them.

The increase in attendance was fueled by popular musicians like Taylor Swift and Bruce Springsteen, who performed in the UK throughout the year, drawing large crowds to their shows.

Specifically, Swift earned millions during her groundbreaking Eras tour by packing massive arenas nationwide, including Wembley Stadium.

Discussing the thriving commercial aspect of Britain’s live music events, Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy stated that be it a grand concert in a large stadium or a small, bustling local venue, music serves as a powerful unifier and significantly impacts society positively.

As a devoted admirer, I can’t help but feel immense pride in our nation’s music scene. It’s one of the most treasured gifts we’ve shared with the world, igniting passion in young hearts across the globe. Our music is an integral part of our identity, a testament to who we are as a country.

However, Tom Kiehl, the CEO of UK Music, points out that while there’s an economic boom, it’s tempered by the various financial and logistical challenges that touring musicians encounter.

He mentioned that while music brings significant advantages to our communities, our industry encounters several hurdles. These include escalating touring costs for artists and the potential shutdown of venues, recording studios, and other musical establishments.
