Following a recent issue with Prime Video, two more movies in the popular action series are planned, creating a great opportunity for Sam Elliott to reprise his role.
While Sam Elliott has recently become well-known for his TV work in shows like Landman, 1883, and The Ranch, he’s mostly done voice acting in films lately. That might be about to change, though, if he reprises his role in a famously over-the-top, but beloved, action movie he appeared in years ago.
Okay, so everyone’s been talking about whether he’ll come back to this series, and honestly, it seemed like a long shot for a while. But with all the drama happening over at Prime Video recently, it’s starting to feel like a return is actually pretty likely. It won’t be easy, I’m sure, but things are definitely shifting.
With 2 Road House Sequels In Production, Sam Elliott Can Finally Return To The Action Franchise
Despite a strong debut on Prime Video in 2024, the remake of Road House faced behind-the-scenes issues. Director Doug Liman disagreed with Amazon MGM Studios on several creative decisions, and was disappointed the film went straight to streaming instead of being shown in theaters.
Owing to this conflict, two Road House movies are reportedly in production.
Prime Video is planning a sequel to their recent Road House remake, hoping to capitalize on its popularity, and will feature Jake Gyllenhaal. However, the original director, Doug Liman, is also making his own Road House movie, called Road House: Dylan. This new film will be a direct sequel to the 1989 original, ignoring the remake entirely. This situation is causing confusion about the future of the Road House series.
There’s some good news, though: both of these movies could bring Sam Elliott back to the series.
Sam Elliott was a key figure in the original Road House film. Bringing him back wouldn’t just connect the new movie to the original’s devoted fans, it would also create a strong emotional link between the older and newer films.
Since two new Road House films are being made—one of which will continue the story of the original—many believe we might see Sam Elliott reprise his role.
Sam Elliott’s Road House Return Would Be Exciting, But It Faces 1 Challenge
Sam Elliott’s character, Wade Garrett, died in the first Road House movie, making his return in a sequel impossible in that role. However, the new remake isn’t tied to the original timeline, so he could appear in a different capacity. This would be a clever way to acknowledge Elliott’s memorable performance without changing what happened in the first film.
The upcoming Road House sequel might include glimpses of Wade Garrett through flashbacks. Alternatively, Sam Elliott could take on a completely new character, building on his transformation in the first film.
It would be fantastic to see Sam Elliott back in a movie, particularly one connected to the Road House series, which played a big role in establishing his signature on-screen image early in his career. Despite the uncertainty surrounding the future of the Road House franchise due to issues with Prime Video, bringing Sam Elliott back could help steady things up.
