Sam Elliott’s attempt to bring the character who inspired Jack Reacher to life didn’t work because he took a different approach than the successful Prime Video series. However, with a new spinoff, Neagley, and season 4 of Reacher coming soon, Amazon’s thrilling shows remain incredibly popular – at least for now.
With over 30 books already written, the Jack Reacher series by Lee Child provides plenty of material for the show. Over the years, the author has mentioned several influences on the character of the wandering hero, Reacher. He’s particularly inspired by Sherlock Holmes and the thrilling novel The Day of the Jackal by Frederick Forsyth.
The Travis McGee Books Were A Major Influence On Jack Reacher
Beginning with The Deep Blue in 1964, John D. MacDonald wrote 21 novels featuring Travis McGee, a rugged “salvage consultant.” McGee lives on a boat in Florida and makes a living by recovering stolen property for clients, taking half of whatever he finds as his fee. Author Lee Child has frequently credited MacDonald’s work as the primary influence on his creation of the Jack Reacher character.
Lee Child based many of Jack Reacher’s characteristics on Travis McGee, particularly his habit of defending those who can’t defend themselves and his combination of intelligence and physical strength. Child also drew inspiration from MacDonald’s novels when learning how to write suspenseful thrillers. Two of MacDonald’s books have been made into films, starting with 1970’s Darker than Amber, which starred Rod Taylor.
Sam Elliott starred as Travis McGee in a 1983 TV movie based on John D. MacDonald’s seventeenth novel, The Empty Copper Sea. It was meant to be the first installment in a potential TV series, and Elliott had a five-year contract. However, despite good ratings, the series never materialized.
Sam Elliott’s Travis McGee Pilot Was Disrespectful To The Source Material
It’s hard to imagine this happening now, but before the Travis McGee movie aired, Elliott shared his concerns with The Philadelphia Inquirer. He’d initially agreed to participate because he was a fan of John D. MacDonald’s books, but he quickly became unhappy with how ABC was handling the adaptation. He was particularly bothered by changes to important elements of the series, like the Florida location and McGee’s iconic houseboat, The Busted Flush.
Both scenes were cut from the initial version, and Elliott wasn’t pleased with how the screenwriters altered his character. He felt they believed they could improve upon the original books by John D. MacDonald. Despite his reservations about the script’s quality, Elliott ultimately agreed to participate in the project.
Despite a promising start, ABC likely decided that the challenges of making a Travis McGee show outweighed any potential benefits, especially after the pilot was finished. This might have been a good thing, as the actor playing McGee already felt the show had lost the heart of what made the original books special.
Prime’s Reacher Worked Because It’s Faithful To Lee Child’s Books
The recent Travis McGee series failed to resonate with viewers because its creators tried to change the original stories. In contrast, the team behind Reacher has stayed much closer to Lee Child’s books, making only minor adjustments each season.
Alan Ritchson’s portrayal of Reacher truly captures the character as written in the novels. While adapting a book always requires some changes to the setting, plot, or characters, the Prime Video series consistently stays true to the spirit of the Jack Reacher books.
The popularity of Reacher clearly demonstrates what works. It’s unfortunate that the Travis McGee TV movie didn’t follow a similar path, because it had the potential to be a great 1980s detective series. However, as an early inspiration for Lee Child’s Reacher, it could be reimagined for today’s audiences.
