Salvaged Sound: Juyong Shim’s “Horn Series” Brings New Life to Obsolete Speaker Parts

Korean designer Juyong Shim displayed “NEW CRAFTSMANSHIP: A NEW WORLD” at this year’s Milan Design Week in SaloneSatellite. In this exhibition, he presented the Horn Series – a set of sculptural furniture made from reused speaker components. Juyong Shim’s creative endeavor reinvented the structural concept behind speaker horns, thereby transforming their purpose by combining practicality with artistic flair.

The Horn Series explores the enduring nature of material memory by repurposing industrial sound equipment into everyday items such as chairs, tables, storage units, and lighting fixtures. In this collection, salvaged speaker horns, frames, and casings become the main structural and decorative components. These elements not only add to the furniture’s modular design but also improve its visual appeal and practical utility. For example, a table within this series can be converted into a lamp, providing a space-efficient solution.

Shim’s creative journey kicks off by gathering unwanted and excess speaker components from suppliers and forgotten stockpiles. These components are chosen for their durability and material quality, then integrated with new materials such as steel tubing and industrial fittings. The resulting furniture is built using techniques like cutting, welding, bolting, and powder coating, with a focus on minimally invasive methods and user-friendly assembly.
