Ever since I’ve been involved, I’ve seen how Cannes’ unwavering dedication to cinematography has turned it into a shining light for filmmakers worldwide. A multitude of aspiring and accomplished directors have found their way there to establish their unique voice in the realm of cinema.

This year is no less unique, as some first-time filmmakers at Cannes, such as Kristen Stewart (“The Chronology of Water”), Scarlett Johansson (“Eleanor the Great”), and Harris Dickinson (“Urchin”), are already quite recognized in the industry. They have all premiered their feature directorial debuts in the Un Certain Regard section of Cannes.

Several seasoned Cannes attendees have come back, among them are Tom Cruise (from Mission: Impossible – Fallout), Robert De Niro – honored with a Palme d’Or 49 years after Taxi Driver’s debut at Cannes – and Quentin Tarantino, who acknowledged low-budget Western director George Sherman.

Organizers state that this strict decision aims to discourage the fashion trend of revealing outfits, often referred to as “naked dresses,” which expose a significant amount more than they cover, at the red carpet events.

According to a Cannes Festival guideline, it’s important to note that showing bare skin is not allowed on the red carpet or any other festival location for propriety reasons.

At the festival, those responsible for greeting will need to ensure that only individuals adhering to these rules are granted access to the red carpet.

The recently published festival-goer guidelines came with a list of unexpected policy changes. These guidelines detail the appropriate behavior expected from attendees at public events.

Visitors are anticipated to gather at the esteemed Grand Auditorium Louis Lumière over a bustling two-week period for some of the most prestigious movie showcases, which will take place during the Cannes event.

It’s clear that the well-known location has shifted towards a stricter dress code, preferring formal attire such as suits, tuxedos, and long evening gowns instead of attention-grabbing outfits.

In simpler terms, you’re allowed to wear classic LBDs (little black dresses), cocktail dresses, pantsuits, fancy blouses, and sophisticated sandals, which can come with or without a heel.

It’s uncertain whether French TV broadcasters, cautious about showing nudity, may have influenced the adoption of this stricter policy, as it marks a first time such a decision is being made.

Prominent red-carpet occasions, such as the Cannes Film Festival, are broadcast in France on France Télévisions.

Lately, the annual event has been drawing more models and social media personalities than actors and movie creators, leading to a rise in bold, daring fashion choices on the red carpet.

In the year 2021, renowned American model Bella Hadid showcased her décolletage in a deep-necked black dress at a viewing of the movie Three Floors.
